I got a bead today that finally looks like something. I was doing the little circles rather than just trying to lay a straight bead. This is Hobart 1/8" 6010 at 64 amps, electrode positive.
What can you suggest to improve on this result other than just practice? Self diagnosis tells me more consistent speed.

There are a few rods that are recommeded by the manufacturer to have a whipping weaving action 6010 is one of them, 64 amps is on the low end of the scale for that rod, 100 amps is considered optimum by Hobart. Check out Hobarts rod data sheets for the different rods, good reading about how to use them effectively.

i would crank the amps up to between 77-95
looks like you are not holding a constant arc length and travel speed and rod angle
6010 is a rod that you want to whip, it's a fast freezing all position rod. A lot of people use it to make a root pass welding pipe, and then fill and cap with 7018. When I was at Lincoln's welding school it was taught to be lincoln's dirty, rusty, greasy, and painted steel welding rod. This rod gave the whole stack of dimes saying that you hear a lot tig welding. You can download a copy of lincolns stick guide that tells you about all the different rods. More amps, definitely. A good rule for setting 1/8" 6010,7010,6011,etc. should be where you can run a stick of 3/32" 7018 with the same amp setting. At 64 amps you would never get the 7018 to run, let alone get it to start. You will learn why they call it stick welding though. Recommend using around 85-95 amps, maybe even higher depending on how accurate your machine is. Also, use a series of cursive "e's" instead of a whipping technique. This allows you to learn to keep heat in the puddle and pull more slag to the surface. As you progress you will be able to use a whip or weaving technique later. When you can increase to the highest amps you are comfortable with try using a 3/32" 7018 rod. Just let it drag though. Have fun.
