Project #2 Dyethor Drain bowl for machine.

Today I'm going to make a drain bowl for one of our machines. It sets on top of our machine and collects the gasoline and drains it through a hose into a storage tank.
Metal required is;
1 10" piece of 6" sch 40 steel pipe cut square on both ends.
1 6" round 1/4" plate steel.
10 pieces of 1" angle stock 3/16" thick cut to 1" long pieces.
1 1"npt coupler.
I use a automatic band saw to cut the 6"pipe and the angle iron. A plasma cutter to make cutouts on the pipe. A drill press to drill the holes. A mig welder to weld it all together.


This first picture is of the Blank round plate. I need to find the center and locate where the other holes will go.

To find the center-line I use a compass and make a few arc's the distance of the compass doesn't really matter. You just put the pivot end on the edge of the circle.

The next arc you make by putting the pivot end at where the first arc ends. and make another arc.

You only need to make one last arc. using the same method.

Next you get a ruler and make a straight line based on where the arches intersect. This will always be the exact center line if done properly.

Now using a ruler you can measure the distance of the line and divide it by 2 to fint the exact center of the circle.

Based off of the dimensions in the technical drawing of the cylinder. I use the following formulas to find the distances of where I need to locate the holes.

Then I get a ruler and measure from the center mark of the circle on the straight line the distances to where the holes will be located. Once I have those marked. then I use measurements for side A and B and mark on a square. Line it up find and mark the top hole location. then flip it over to find the bottom hole location. The center punch is pointing at one of those locations.

Bummer. I just went to my metal rack and realized I'm out of 6"pipe. I just ordered some and will continue this project tomorrow.
The cylinder the part I'm building mounts on is a 4" diameter 6" stroke pneumatic cylinder. A spike threads on the end and its used to punch holes into gas tanks.

Ok I got in my pipe. I had the metal yard pre-cut it for me so it's faster.

Here I have marked where I'm going to cut out material from the pipe using a plasma cutter. There is an identical mark on the opposite side.

I try to use something straight as a guide for the plasma torch anywhere possible. Here I'm using a copper bar held on with a clamp.

Here I have cut out a hole for the drain port.

Next I used a flapper wheel to grind off the mill scale and varnish to have a clean surface to weld on and to ultimately paint.

Here I am setting a tab in place to weld. I repeat this 8 times evenly spaced around the pipe.

Now I tacked on the plate in the bottom of the pipe its ready to be welded.
