My MIG wouldn't feed unless the tensioner was cranked all the way up. A professional welder showed me how to insert the wire through a foam ear noise plug (the kind you stick in your ear) between the MIG roll and the tensioner. The foam wipes the wire prior to entering and keeps the roller from gumming up with the protective coating on the wire. No more slippage.
Good mig wire won't have anything on it since that's what the copper is for. I've seen flux core wire with some gunk on it. I use these Attachment 10114
