warranty replacement or upgrade what should I do?

Katya informed me that they (Everlast) would be replacing my failed multipro 205 with a 2013 model unit. Because my faith in the mosfets has been shaken, at my request I also have the option to upgrade to the pu 205 for an additional cost of $400. If I choose the upgrade, after all is said and done I will have paid a couple hundred more than the original cost of a pu 205. Not a huge loss but is it worth it for the better unit?

The other option might be to regain faith in the mosfet model and accept the replacement, which i would use for tig/arc only and taking the $400 i would spend on the upgrade and instead using it to purchase a standalone plasma cuter like the pp 70s. Either way im sure my wife is going to kill me.

If you are doing light hobby type stuff, maybe a couple of hours on the weekends, the MOSFET should be fine. However, if you are gonna push the duty cycle, welding all day, for hours and hours, I would go with IGBT, they are simply more rugged. Same thing goes for multi process over single function machines, the multi seem to be suited to more light duty usage . Also there is the time involved in swapping the machine over and remembering to switch everything to the proper settings for each process. Nothing like forgetting to switch from air to argon when you Iight up your TIG torch. For small projects it may not be a big deal, but depending on what you are doing it can get old in a hurry. Budget and space can be a deciding factor. If you only have room for one machine a multi makes perfect sense.

Space is not an issue but budget might be. In this year alone I bought a 25hp diesel tractor, resided my two story house and put up roughly 400 ft of vinyl fence. Just a few months ago I had been eyeballing the I-MIG 250p but I ended up buying a Hobart Ironman 230 from a local dealer who was closing up shop for what I think was a great deal ($900 with spool gun). Needless to say, Im feeling pretty poor right now. I do all my own work so I can usually justify buying a tool to complete a project rather then rent or pay someone else to do it. However, right now my wallet is telling me to not spend anymore money but my brain is saying take the upgrade for $400 and be happy with it. I dont weld/cut daily because I make my living programming web applications for the state. But when I do get around to using my machines its usually to their full potential.

I think ill sleep on it..

Made up my mind and purchased the upgrade to the pu 205. It seems everyone who has purchased the PU 205 are happy with it.
