Thread: Stainless filler?

    Default Stainless filler?

    Hi,

I been tinkering around with stainless for awhile. I been looking around for the best price and place to get filler material. I cant believe I came across this stainless wire at harbor freight. It sais its 304 on it. It also seams to weld okay. The shocking part was the price at only $6. Its on sale now for only $2.27. One lb worth of stainless wire for $2.27? Doesnt something seam absolutley wrong about this. I was thinking of how pure it actually is. Like I said, it seams to weld ok. I am no expert though. Its not intended for welding. It actually lock wire. But at that price I cant seam to argue with it. Maybe some of these people on here who know more about metal can tell me if this stuff is loaded with some kinda nasty metal.

You should not be cutting corners when welding. I understand that you are just eperimenting, but I would not make that a normal practice. You should use a grade higher filler than your base metal. If you base is 304, then your filler should be 308. Stainless filler rod is not THAT expensive at your LWS.
