Thread: PM 205 ok to tig over stick tacks?

Default PM 205 ok to tig over stick tacks?

I have now had my multi unit for just about a year. So far I have only used the tig and love it for that. I am new to stick but thought this project (home made boat float inflating 6 55gallon barrels for floatation ) would be a good one to try the stick on. Its an outside project as you can see at least for the tack up. The stick looks a bit messy as I am new to this. 1/8th wall tubing to 1/4 inch angle for most of it.

At this time I have 3 questions.

    1. I am using 6013 rod, is this ok.

    2. Not sure to use electrode neg or pos....switched back and forth but did not seem to make much difference.

    3. If I want to go over all the welds by grinding and tig welding is that ok or is there contamination from the flux in the rod for me to tig weld. If I do try and tig it to clean things up I guess I should grind and brush?

    1) Yes, no problem. Just make sure you get good fusion and no slag in the middle of the joint.
    2) Unless specifically told to do otherwise, always electrode Postitive (reverse polarity)
    3) You should not tig over in this case. All you will do is overheat the tubing and make a large heat affected zone, making the area just outside of the weld weak and brittle.

A 6013 will run well IF you clean the metal slightly with a grinder first.

6013 is more of a temp repair low penetration rod for the reason it got nick named Farmer rod
i would weld it up with some e6010/e6011 or some e7018
