Thread: where is my tig torch?

  1. Default where is my tig torch?

an air cooled torch was supposed to be shipped with my 225lx instead i was given a water cooled torch and was told that one was being shipped to me over a month ago. i have a tracking number that does me no good and ive called about the torch 3 times WHATS THE DEAL????!!!!!!?????

The water and air cooled torch are the same . the only difference is the water has the 2 extra lines so you can hook up to a cooler. If a customer asks me about this i simply point this out to them and let them know they have the option of using it as either air or water cooled.
Obviously from what you are saying the U.S does things a little differently , but i really have no idea why they would suggest sending the same torch minus the lines.

I thought a water cooled torch used a smaller cable since it is kept cool by the water. I believe an air cooled torch would use bigger/heavier cable for the same amperage rating...

The Air cooled torch is not rated at 225amps. You need the water cooled to get this rating. Same as the WP9 vs WP20same size , 9 is 110amps max , and 20 is 250 amps because of cooling for water.
The recomendation is water for over 200 amps but a lot of people even say 180 and over you need coolant.
We have discussed using a WP17 ( probably the most common size used ) but unfortunately we would have to many problems with warranty claims because some users would burn out the torch using it above the reccomended settings.

    Duncan,
Our water cooled torches will not stand up to use very long at amps above 100. I have and others have tried it over that, with rapid failure. They are made differently as the bare cable inside the torch water line will get hot and melt through without cooling. This type cable is designed for water or gas flowing through the whip to cool it. The air cooled torch has a solid line or cable on ours with a much larger diameter cable that is sheathed just like a welding cable, with a separate gas line. The larger diameter of the cable makes less heat as it carries the current. The inside cable on the water cooled torch is indeed small and it won't support 200 amp welding but for a limited time before the cable gets warm and melts into the the surrounding hose.

The basic 26 is good for 200 amps and even 225 if the duty cycle is limited, but it will hold up much better than the water cooled at this amp level.

Miller, Lincoln, offer lower amp rated torches, but most customers do abuse this, but just as ours are, they limit them to a one year warranty.

Mike, If we told you you would get a air cooled torch subbed, then that's what needs to happen. Give us a call, and we will get it straightened out.

I went ahead and paid more to get both the included torch and an air cooled flex head. Most of my welding will be below the 200 AMP so the smaller flex head will be nice and then I will have the other torch for times I run higher amps.

Making sure you saw Mark's comment about 100AMPS in post #5 to Duncan. Since you mentioned under "200 AMPS".

was that not speaking about watercooled torches not lasting long above 100amps?

The air cooled flex heads are only good for 125 or so. (wp9)

Is there an air cooled flex head option available from Everlast or is this referring to a different brand?

Everlast has air (WP9) and water cooled (WP20) flex heads torches. If we're out in the California warehouse, everlastwelders.ca (Canada) or everlastalaska.com (US) will probably have them in stock.

The Flex head torches i carry are as follows
    WP17 Flex Air Cooled 60% @ 150amps DC
    60% @ 120amps AC

WP9 Flex Air Cooled 60%@125amps DC
    60% @ 80amps AC

    WP20 Flex Water Cooled 60% @ 250amps DC
    60% @ 175amps DC

I have a limited number of WP18 and a couple of WP20 flex with 25' hose, but for the most part the above Torches listed is what we have in stock on a regular basis as a stockable item
Gas lenses and Cups are available for both the smaller WP-WP20 models and our WP 17 - 26 models along with all other consumables for all our torchs.

Our tungsten is mostly 2% lanthanated and 2% Thoriated with Ceiated in most sizes but i know we are low on the Ceriated right now .
We will be adding Aluminum Filler rod and possibly Stainless Steel this Summer
The cost of Aluminum and SS is getting high so it is probably worth it for our customers to get a better price by having us offer it to them.
    Cheers

Anyone thinking about going with a smaller flex head, I'd highly recommend getting with Duncan (Titan Wench) and grab the WP-20 with the 25' hose. Great torch, water/air cooled, longer lead and a flex head. And a good price I am sure compared to CK and others.

Duncan: What consumables does yours WP-flex torches come with? Also could you edit your last post and add the amp specs for the WP-18 and WP-26, it would be a good email for us to link to for torch questions. I can move it to the tech area too. Last, the WP-20 spec in your post, edit the 175amps DC to AC. Thanks.
