My Very First Welding Project
Well, I had some spare square tubing left over from another project and decided to build a grinder stand. I gotta tell you, I'm pleased with the outcome but I made every welding mistake you can think of, undercut, cold, porosity etc. I guess the only thing I got right was it sets level on its feet and doesn't rock or wobble. I hosed it down with Krylon hoping that would cover up some of the ugly. Didn't really seem to help! I sure did have fun farting around with it though. I'm a pretty good sport so chuckle and snipe away!







I haven't found a place for it just yet so it's out of the way and not dusting up everything around it. Yeah, I know I could have bought one, but they all seem to be made for people 5 feet tall...

Looks good, I like the feet on it , not so easy to do ,to get them all lined up and level, and I know about things built for little people,I'm 6'5" even my fridge seems built for midgets, tired of bending everytime I go to pull a beer or make a sandwich.

might want to spin the the top 45 - that way you can put it closer to the wall

Not bad looking. Looks sturdy enough to handle anything you throw at it.

I built my self a grinder stand similar to that but I used a flywheel from a c-15 cat engine that I got for free, It works great because its very heavy and only a couple of inches thick.

Have you used it much yet? I looks very simillar to the one my dad bought for his grinder. His is very frustrating to use because the vibrations caused by the grinder and the pressure from the work piece makes the base dance and turn like you wouldn't believe. His is too light at the bottom to keep a firm hold on the floor. It might be helpful to fill the tubes with something heavy or bolt it to the floor if you never plan on moving it.

It seems to work fine. The tubing wall is 1/4 thick so the stand alone weighs over 30lbs. It also has rubber pads on the feet of the stand and the grinder feet. No vibration initially when powered up nor when up to speed. It's pretty stable. I've used it for sharpening some lathe tooling and a hand tool or two.

Hmmm, I have a couple 16.5x7 brake drums of a 10 wheeler.... that should be heavy enough. Thanks for the idea.

don't worry, If I post pics I'll turn the heat way down, and get someone to spritz water into my puddle when I weld *snipe*
