I have a chance to buy a used Speedglas 9002x welding hood
for $150 asking price. What are your feelings on this hood? any good? It is an older model but in good working order with extra lenes for outside and in.

Sounds like you want it and at your age why deny yourself, it's about 1/2 price which is fair and it has a fast switch time, you have probaly spent more on less at some time in your life. I'd say go for it,,,cause that will end the wondering about it.

    Geezer you are the MAN.
I posted this question on a couple of other sites and the response has been positive about the quality and value of the helmet iy seems the only down side is that the head gear may slip a bit with age but hell I do that at my age too.
and you are almost right when you say I have at some point in my life. Truth be told I have spent more on way less at MOST points but I enjoyed the crap out of all of it.
I emailed the guy and will try to meet him tomorrow to get it.

    I’m a big Speedglas fan.

I’ve had a bottom of the range Speedglas Utility helmet for over 10 years and I really like it. It’s been perfectly reliable but it’s not really suited for TIG (and I recently bought an Everlast PP205). So I just purchased the top of the range Speedglas 9100xx and I’m really happy with that also. It should be the last helmet I ever buy.

After my long-time welder mate tried the 9100xx, he sold his Kemppi helmet and bought a Speedglas as well.

You will not be disappointed with the 9002x.

I have the speedglas shade #10 utility, and it has great optics and super light weight. I use it up to 180 amps or so. If weight is a concern, you may want to look into it. I tried on a Big Boss at the LWS and although the huge window was awesome, the thing was an anchor. I wonder what thew weight of a high-end speedglas is? Other than that, sounds like a killer deal.

I have had a 9000X for more than 10 years, it looks a little rough, but still keeps going. The only problem I have, is now at more than 10 years old, there are 2 spots starting in the upper left corner, that don't lighten up. they are always dark.

if you have problems finding lenses weldingsupply.com has always come through for me.
I'd like to think I'm the guy they are talkin about when they say, "he could F%^& up a cannon ball in a plowed field."

Not many people know this but a good way to test an auto-darkening helmet is to point a TV infra-red remote control toward it (and press a button). That’s enough to trigger it and the helmet should either darken or flicker (with the pulses from the remote) depending on settings.

I’ve seen some that don’t darken when pointed toward the sun but still work correctly when welding. They seem to respond to abrupt changes in light rather than the actual intensity.

Glad you got your helmet Ray.

I borrowed a speedglas hood from one of my classmates one day when I left my hood at home. They seem to be very comfortable compared to the standard Jackson hood our school gives out. It was hard to give back when I was done using it!

I will do that my first impression is good but Im new at this but like the fit better then the HF I have now and It seems the optics are somewhat cleared and better focused.
I do have the dreaded and seemingly common helmet creep where the hood does not stay up when it should but I found that 3M / Speedglas has a fix for that. I ordered one and when it comes in and I install and use it I will let you know how that works.

Nice looking helmet, I have to admit , I'm a bit jealous, will you ever let me use it if I ever drop by? If that helmt doesn't make you a better welder at least it will make you look like one. I think you bought right at that price. Enjoy the good things in life.

You can use it any time .
I guess you have never seen me or my welds, It will take a lot more then that or any helmet to make either look good.

  16. Default Hey RAM! How about a update?

Hey! It's been about 10 days since you got your super snazzy version of the speedglas line, wondering if you have had a chance to use it. and if so how's it working out for you? I guess the reason that I'm wondering is that i will probably begin to shop for a upgraded helmet in the near future. I have really been leaning toward the new esab unit, its super lightweight and the lighte state is less dark than anyone else. Feedback from real users is more valid than advertising hype, so yours is apreciated
