Thread: Why I like Tig

    Default Why I like Tig

I was doing some vertical tig welds yesterday and reminded myself of what a comparative struggle these are to do nicely in stick or in mig.

Once you get accustomed to TIG, it doesn't seem to matter if it/s uphill, downhill or overhead, the beads turn out perfect or near perfect.

Although TIG is considered a slow form of welding, for me it saves a lot of time and effort by not having to constantly reposition the item being welded. With stick welding, I would always try to flat weld if possible and sometimes went to great lengths to accomplish this.

And then there is the job of spatter cleanup with other weld methods. Most of the time this ends up getting done halfheartedly or not at all!

Good point. I had my TIG welder out for repairs a couple of weeks back, and I needed to get some casters welded on a new work table that I just scored. Not only was it a mess, but the spatter, ick. I almost stopped the project after one bead, then decided to do the whole thing just for uniformity's sake.

I like the versatility. With a couple of switches and knob turns, I can weld any type of metal in my garage, including some titanium I've been playing with

I agree with the OP's statement.

I also enjoy the lack of fumes, sparks, noise, no need to add filler when it's not required. And I can TIG weld in my basement without having to worry about much.

I am surprised at how silent DC welding on steel is.

I wish I had that luxury. Since my power source is a Bobcat, mine is quite noisy and would be lethal in a basement.

I like TIG not only because of how versatile it is, but because I can weld right next to threads or something I want to stay clean without worrying about splatter or anything else messing the part up.

    Adambomb,

Be careful with Titanium unless you have a full respirator.

I started a new thread in general welding about the subject Mark. Please take a look and add your wisdom.

AMEN to that!!! TIG is cleeeeeeeeaaaaaaaan! So much less post weld clean up makes up for the moderately slower weld times compared to MIG :-)
