  1. Default New Feature / Plasma Torch for Power Ultra 205

The Power Ultra has had Pulse added to the Tig Function . This is preset with a low and high pulse feature by means of a toggle switch. In addition to this feature we have added a CNC port and have upgraded the Plasma toch to a original Ergocut S45 for better cutting performance from our previous model.

I just received mine yesterday and played a bit with it today. First time Tig with a "real" DC machine. I managed to put together two stanley disposable knife blades with at least a quarter inch of decent looking "stack of dimes". No filler was used. I used the lowest power setting. Yes I like to learn on something difficult. I only stuck the tungsten to it once and burned my new gloves once.

Thanks Ken. Yes I played with the plasma. It works very well and I really like the new torch (Trafimet S-45) over the one included with the SuperCut 50P. I think you would enjoy the unit a lot. I did back the blades I tiged with a 3/4" thick bar of copper 2" wide like I had seen Jody do over at weldingtipsandtricks.com, I had a little trouble with a breeze causing arc instability so tig will have to be done in a closed shop from now on. Three things I would recommend about the unit:

    1. Current manual with the pulse feature description added. (What is the pulse frequency on low? on high?)
    2. When a machine gets as heavy as this one I would like to see a padded handle as well as the strap it comes with.
    3. The water separator / filter mounting holes put is squarely in front of the CNC plug.

One final note: I am going to work out something on the back for quick gas changes so I can go from plasma / air to tig / argon in a hurry. Probably a switch manifold on the wall or cart with the separator / filter mounted there instead of on the back of the unit.

I have a pretty good one worked out for changing to gas/air in just a few seconds. I'll get some pics up tomorrow

Ok, so I have one female QD on the hose from the tank. Then a male on the inlet side of the air regulator and a female attached to the other end. I just leave them connected when not in use to keep em out of the way and keep bugs and stuff out. Then when I want to use the plasma I just switch out the two and its ready to go. I did weld up a small bracket to the side of the regulator holder which holds a male QD that the females all plug into. Use the best QD fittings you can find so as to not have them leaking out your gas all the time.

I just did some more testing of this unit and it DOES NOT like ANY rust. It was Impossible to strike an arc on stick unless a freshly ground surface was first prepared (not that the surface shouldn't be prepared first but I wanted to see if it would start under less than ideal conditions). I tried this with 6011 1/8"and 7018 3/32". This is not that strange because my Lincoln AC "Tombstone 225A does exactly the same thing. On the other hand my Bobcat will weld on any kind of rusty metal I have tried. Plasma would sputter, cut out and restart continuously with anything but the lightest surface rust on 1/8" plate. I wire brushed (bench grinder) the plate and it cut really good with a consistent plasma arc. Tig of course needs a very clean surface as dust will cause the arc to pop and flutter.

Edit, 27 May 2011: after straightening the spark gap and setting it at .030 and adjusting the spring in the air solenoid valve the Plasma cuts much better on rusty material and the arc is very consistent.

The SC 50P I sent back was VERY rust tolerant and cut the bottom of an old fire damaged heavily rusted oxygen cylinder (I am talking rust scales here) without skipping a beat with a very good cut quality.

On another note I manufactured a quick bracket out of some C-Purlin scrap and mounted my filter assembly to the wall. Made quick connects much like Timberwolf shows above for quick change from Argon to Air.

Overall I like the machine. Oh, and one more modification necessary. Around here we have a wasp like insect called a mud or dirt dobber. They are champions of fist sized adobe nest construction , INSIDE EQUIPMENT(multi-chambered nest which they fill with anesthetized spiders and an egg to feed off of said spiders). All machines with ventilation louvers need screen WIRE (not nylon) behind the louvers to prevent the building of these adobe structures on sensitive electronics!!
