Thread: My Smoker

    Default My Smoker

Well, it does not look like it, but at one time I welded for a living. Welding put me through college, and it took me a while to regain my ability to fabricate. I started off with a welder, torch, and grinder; needless to say I have purchased numerous tools because of this build. I will probably put this one on craigslist when I finish, I made a lot of mistakes that I would not make again. I'm not quite finished, and I would like to take everything I learned and re-learned and do another build. I think put all the doors on at least twice, not to mention metal warping, I could go on and on about my mistakes. I built the smoker on a Northern Tool trailer kit, I wanted a smaller cooker that would be easy to move. It's 1/8" metal inside and 12 gauge on the outside with 1-1/4 angle for the frame. I added more support and bracing on the trailer. I still have a little work left to finish.

Nice, I'm going to use a water pan to help even out the heat, and it's a little more forgiving using a water pan.

I have a friend that swears by dry sand in a pan to even out the heat instead of water. I still use water though.

Considering I drive a Scion XB 70mph is out of the question! It started life as a Northern Tool trailer kit so I do have a title. It's not as big as it looks in the pictures it's a little under 5' tall from the top of the trailer to the ground, its 24" deep, and 40" wide. It's easy to handle and move around and will not take much room under my back porch. There is enough room under the fenders to add larger tires. The only thing I am nervous about is being top heavy, I may add some flat bar under the trailer for weight.

After building this one I would do things different if I build another smoker. I purchased a trailer at Northern tool on sale for $179.00, my next one I will look for a larger trailer on craigslist, you can find them from $200.00 on up. I would use tubing instead of angle iron (tubing was more expensive), and I would use 18g sheet metal because it will bend easier, and use insulation. with the exception of the trailer you can build on for around $200.00.

I finally got my smoker finished, all I have left is to bolt on the tail lights. I learned a lesson, I will test fire before I paint if I ever build another smoker. I had two spots that leaked because I ground off to much metal. I have to paint the left side again. It came out pretty good, and I was very happy with the cook. It hold heat very well, I had to choke it down to get the temps down low.

Now you did not have to show that. I will have to smoke something since you made me hungry.

This may be the greatest thing I have ever seen. I'm hungry and jealous at the same time. If you ever got pulled over with it you could just bribe your way out with some steaks. By the time the cop got to your door he is going to be so hungry. Also if you ever hit a deer you could just cut it up right there and by the time you get home it will be getting close to cooked.

Steaks are for a "grill". This is a smoker. It is made for "Real" pieces of meat. Say 5 lb chunks and up. Usually 50 lbs at a time at least.

    You are correct sir.
Very nice job on that smoker Sean.
How much did you end up with in metal cost.
I have been smokoing for a while now but with an electric model.
Someday I would like to build a nice wood fired one like that.
