Thread: CNC port arc voltage dividers

  1. Default CNC port arc voltage dividers

I am just about ready to wire up my CNC port but have a question about the pinouts. The included quick start manual only showed the port pinouts but no real explanation of anything.

There are 2 arc voltage divider settings - when do I use this and what is it's purpose.

    Thanks in advance!

ARC voltage divider connections come into play when you have AVHC, otherwise you don't need them if you have a fixed height torch

    great thanks geezer.

Although I am not a electronics guy, I believe one of the arc voltage dividers is used to determine to read the transfer of the arc.

I've not tested the connector yet. But this is my take as an electronics guy. Use this information at your own risk as it is untested by me and just from looking at the diagram.

So this is just to get you in the ballpark on CNC hookup and you really should call your CNC controller manufacturer and tell them what I/O and signal pins you have and let them assist you. If someone want to send me a CNC table/controller setup to confirm it on I am more than willing?

    1) You have the start-stop (Pins 1-2 you short with a relay contact "input" from your controller to start and stop the cutting process)

    2) You have ok-to-move (Pins 9-10 "I am assuming, so test it with an ohm meter" a N.O. output relay contact for the cutter to tell your controller to start running your CNC motors and process).

Like Geezer said, the above two are probably all you need for most low cost cutter controllers.

    3) You have the full arc voltage (DC pin 5+ and 7-)

    4) Divided arc voltage (DC 4- and 6+) for higher end machine that require it (1/16 and 1/50 via jump inside the machine).

There's a jumper inside the machine (on small board in the rear top of the machine that has CNC in big letters and goes to the CNC connector on the back) to set the divided arc voltage. You can have 1/16 of arc voltage (jumper on) or 1/50 of arc voltage (jumper off). It will show this lower percentage of the full arc DC voltage on pins 4- and 6+. Not sure what pin 3 does just yet.

    Other notes

If you have an electronics background and require another divisor, you can "probably" do it with an external voltage divider on arc voltage pins 5+ and 7- or the divided down pins 4- and 6+, with two 1/4 watt resistors. 4 or 7 would be your ground (-), middle of the divider would be the new (+) divided arc voltage.

Before wiring divided arc voltage or anything to your CNC controller, I would take a DVM and check them "if you for some reason chose not to contact your CNC controller vendor".

If you made your own controller, we hope this helps. We will update this information if we find or hear anything different.

A brighter picture of the control board and it rotated 180 degrees would have help me with my old tired eyes. I see the spades in the upper left. Can you email a larger version to support@everlastwelders.com. Maybe a website or name/model of the controller as well.

thanks Mike - I hooked it up that evening and can fire the torch. I do not have THC yet but looking into the lcthc from candcnc.com.

the unit in Randy's post looks like the THC300 from soundlogic

Thanks Cobretti, I will take a look at the links. I pulled the pictures from Randy, but can not read the small print at all.

    Hi Mike
cobretti is right I do have THC300 from soundlogic

I bought the PP60C, my CNC table manufacturer said a 20:1 arc voltage was reccommended, but he also told me to hook it up to the full arc voltage, which I guess has a 100K resistor already in line.

I tried hooking it up to the 1/16 voltage divider (at his request), the torch basically just sat on top of the material and would not move unless I pressed the manual 'move' button. If I hook it up to the 'full' arc voltage, the THC will raise the torch about 1" off the material.

He told me to run a 100K resistor off the table ground (inside the machine), to the (+) side of the control box (THC), and connect the (-) main wire going to the torch.

If the CNC plug has a 100K resistor in line, why does this not already work for me?

    Thanks

Sounds like he is trying to parallel another 100K (or series, not real sure). So he wants 50K or 200K in there checking something I guess. Would have to ask to know for sure.

I think he just wants a single 100K resistor, which is why I can't figure out why pins 5 and 7 won't work, as I would assume the (+) already has a 100K resistor in series. I tried running a 100K resistor in series with the wire coming out of pin 5, but that didn't seem to change anything (torch still raised up about 1" off material).

It is a Burntables CNC, www.burntables.com feel free to give them a call and ask to see if this can be resolved somehow, as you 'technical' guys may be able to figure something out better.

The number is on their site (I don't want to post his cell #), ask for Kyle.

Can you ask him if he was making a voltage divider with the resistor? If so, drop a 200K pot in there and tweak to the voltage he wants.

Will take a look at the site when I get some time. Looks for a CNC table myself.

Does pin 5 have a 100K resistor? I assume so, but the chinese paperwork is worthless, not sure if it is meant to read a 100K resistor can be added in series. He told me if it has a 100K resistor on the (+) wire then it should work, but I have had no luck yet. The problem COULD be in the THC itself, I am not an electrical guru with small stuff like this, if I connected a meter to pins 5/7 (on AC I guess?) what reading should I be getting while the machine is cutting to verify it is sending the proper reading?

Rod, I am hoping I don't have to go to that extreme, I am pretty sure that would likely void the warranty on the plasma cutter to go soldering to the circuit board too. Kind of hoping for a solution from Everlast

If I've already got ATHC, I don't see why buying another ATHC system will help any, it seems to me that what I have should be made to work...
