Thread: Got my eye on a small rod oven

Default Got my eye on a small rod oven

I saw this on craigslist and if it's deep enough for a 14" rod, I'm going to get it. it's an 8 bottle wine refrigerator. Should be just the ticket for the 5 or 6 5lb boxes of rod I have and won't take up a pile of space. I asked how deep it was but since wine bottles are 12", I expect it'll be too shallow unless it's designed to hold those magnum bottles which I doubt.

Well, It's 14" deep. If it were 1/4" deeper, it would work. Phooey.

    Angle your rod slightly.

I wrote them back and they said that it was 14.25 at the bottom, but the fan made it tight at the top. I'm ripping all the refrigeration out so it should work fine. I'm picking it up tomorrow. I think instead of a light bulb, I will try one of the golden rods they use for gun safes. Think that'll work?

Another idea to use is one of those small electric toaster cook ovens that are about the same size. They can go up to 500 degrees and are pretty efficient. Works great if the wife doesn't mind you taking hers.

I've got one of those toaster ovens already, but I'm not really going to bake the rods. It's just going to be more like humidity controlled storage. I also want the rods facing out so I can open the door and take a rod out instead of having the rods side to side.

It worked out but just barely. There isn't 1/8" of room between the rods and the glass. It's actually a bit big for my uses. I wish I could stand it up on it's side to make it tall instead of wide but the door wouldn't work too well that way I think. I'll play around with it.

That looks interesting. What are the seals like on the front door? Does the inside have any vent openings or a fan opening in it?

Oddly enough, for it being a refrigerator, there isn't any seal on the front door. It closes magnetically but no actual seal as such. There's a fan in the back that blows the cool air. Didn't think about it, but there's no return on the inside to recirculate the air so it must be fresh air the whole time.

I decided not to use it anyway. It takes up too much bench space and the only thing in there that actually needs any kind of humidity control is the 1/2lb of 7018 I have. When that's gone I'm not going to buy any more unless I need it for something specific. Hobart actually says to avoid oven temps above 130 and humidity below 50% with their 6011. I'll just use that and their 7014.
