    Default Engine turning

Here are a few pictures of my first attempt at engine turning, or Jeweling,
It is on an instrument cluster that will be installed in a dash I made for a friends 1963 Austin Mini cooper. the discoloration on the right is a shadow and not a flaw.

That's a nice finish for a first timer. After seeing someone do it by hand, I have determined I may not have enough patience to do it so I haven't tried. But I got a panel I want to put on my SA 200 though when I get it restored. Might be a time to try.

looks nice, ram. did you do that freehand or in a press? we've got a morris minor PU we're going to hotrod later this year, I'm hoping to do something similar to that cluster inset in the dash.

I'm imagining just use a rotating tool in a drill press. But, how do you line up each of the patterns so evenly? Do you lay out some marks beforehand (like centerpunch where center of each mark should be), or just really carefully "eyeball it" and take you time to get each round spot's position just right? Or do you use some sort of template?

Oh I know maybe you had a huge XY table (That almost seems like would be cheating though.)

    Looks Nice Ram.

I woudl think you could use a drill press and put a sort of fence on it, similar to a table saw. Slide the part along and hit it with the roll, then index the "fence" over a row, and go again. Wouldn't help with spacing within the row, but would be really straight and evenly spaced width wise.

Any day on a motorcycle like this that ends just needing parts and labor is a good day.

I did it on my Mill drill I set up a fence for the X axis (right and left) and then indexed with marks on a piece of tape I put marks every 1/8 inch the marks were in red and green alternating colors to allow for the offset between the x axis rows I just moved my y axis (in and out) .250 for every row I used a 1/2 inch mandrel I made from an Aluminum rod and using a HF gasket punch cut 1/2 inch plugs from a scotch brite pad and hot glued them to the mandrel. I got about two rows out of a plug There are 73 circles in each row and 25 rows , it took a while.
I have to thank a fellow who's site I found on line named Eamonn Keogh. He was kind enough to give me some of the tips I posted above.

That's what I was thinking. I have an xy table on my drillpress. I think I can do a whole panel with it if I screw the panel to a backer board and move the board when I get to the end of the travel.

The red and green mark idea is great, I'll have to remember that.
