Thread: Having trouble with PP50

  1. Default Having trouble with PP50

I'm having trouble with the pilot arc not starting right away and cutting out. I figure it some king of solenoid problem since I hear something 'clicking' when it goes on and off.

    Is there a detailed adjustment procedure...with pix's

    Thanks

Oh yeah, need more torch tips 'n stuff. can you point me in the right direction?

It's possibly a sticky solenoid and there is a resistor in the machine to control the pilot. The resistor is a fixed value, so it would need to be changed out. If you call tech support we can assist you much better and faster.

Consumables can be bought online though us. Or you can google "tramimet S45 consumables". You can buy them locally in a pinch but they are pricey. Most Harbor Freight stores carry the S45 consumables.

So I have an S 45 torch on the PP50?

I'll look up the parts for that torch...and I'll call tech support the start of next week.

    Thanks, Mike

Or it could just be a torch, if you mean the solenoid clicks on and off while resetting the torch and the arc. What's your air pressure?

I couldn't tell you if it's the torch or something in the 'box'. Most of the time there's a pause before the pilot arc starts and many times it will only stay lit for a second before the click and the hose deflates. I loosened the tip a bit and got it to stay fired up longer...if that has anything to do with it.

Compressor is set at 70 PSI and the plasma is about 35-40.

Bingo. Major problem discovered, at least part of it. Your operating pressure is dropping below the low pressure cut out threshold.

Please download the manual and read it. You should have supply set around 90 psi and the machine should be around 65 psi.

Hey jtybt. Did the air pressure to the torch fix your problem? If so please post a follow up. You never know who you might help down the road. Thanks.

I haven't had a chance to play with it yet. But, I have a 30 gal tank. It holds pressure pretty good. And most of my cutting is 1/8" or less so I figured 40 PSI would be plenty to cut. I'll crank it up when I get a chance.

I'll look over the manual. Thanks guys!

Although tank size is important, the internal line pressure drops about 5-10 psi while in operation, depending upon supply line, and length while in operation.

Finally got a chance to do some cutting. Had to make some bases for SS cleats for the boat. Set the air pressure to 65 and all's well. For some reason I thought thinner material needed less air pressure.

Also found out the flow gauge was in liters. Had it set at 15. Dropped it to 7 and that put a smile on my face, too.

Mostly, all you get with less air pressure is a softer cutting flame, less defined.
