Thread: new Tig welder in SOCAL.

  1. Default new Tig welder in SOCAL.

Hello. I just purchased an I-Tig 200 so I can teach myself to TIG weld.I am a serious gearhead and have done allot of welding using the old Lincoln Arc machine but would like to be able to step away from the grinder.I have always loved the way a good TIG weld looks especially on exposed hot rods.I hope to learn from you guys.My one complaint is the welder did not come with very good instructions on set up.

Default Tig are fun go for it.

    Hi Harp
Well you are like many of us on this site learning to tig. I’m in the same boat but there are many posts and video that are out there to help. Practice, practice, practice is what they all say. It is fun to make changes to the setting and see or read about how it effects how the machine will work and what the weld looks like. Tig welding is great nice finish and no splatter and no grinding. Ebay has great prices on electrodes and consumables buy all the sizes I just bought gas lens from there 4 different sizes.
    Have fun

As Sean mentioned Welding Tips and Tricks is a great resource. The site owner and Star of the welding Videos is Jody Collier. He recently put together a DVD compilation of his videos. Last I looked he still had a few left. The price was right, as I recall about $15 or $20 for two DVDs inc. shipping, a bargain considering the wealth of info contained on them.

You can't go wrong on the weldingtipsandtricks.com. Jody is a AWS-SCWI (American Welding Society - Senior Certified Welding Inspector). And, he really knows his stuff on putting metal together using all processes. Watch his videos a couple of times then try it. Be sure to read his TIG Welding Tricks and sign up for his TIG Basics Course.

Where in SoCal are you? The Fab School in Riverside has a couple great weekend classes to teach mig and tig on steel and aluminum. They are reasonably priced considering the amount of knowledge you walk away with. Its run by Troy Johnson and Dan Moore. These guys are legends in desert and short course off road racing and have designed and built cars and trucks for almost 30 yrs.
