Thread: Power Arc 140st

    Default Power Arc 140st

Just arrived today, I have not had a chance to give it a test run. I did take some pics and did a side by side with my Power Arc 200. It comes with a nice hard case, which I think will come in very handy. I'm looking forward to using this machine! I will post some better pics tomorrow.

I may have to get one of those just so I can say I have one, if it will burn 1/8 rod it would be very handy.

It's so lightweight, the case, and the tig torch this machine has a major handy factor.

Here are some pics of the inside of the welder. I learned a valuable lesson, and I will admit that I am no electrician. I followed the color code from the plug that I purchased at Lowes.

Which resulted in blowing a fuse.

After talking with Mark who called me Saturday evening to help me with my problem. I opened the welder and found the fuses were blown. He mentioned the wiring and I told him that I followed the color code on the plug. This morning I checked my other plugs and realized I had wired the white and black wires backwards. I changed the fuses and put it back together. It's a good smooth welding machine. I will most some more picks later. In my opinion this welder has all the potential to be a money maker!

Here are pics of the inside for those interested.

Looks like they follow "the bigger the glob the better the job" rule when it comes to solder joints. LOL. After years of soldering to aviation specs, seeing solder joints in consumer electronics always makes me cringe a bit.

    Sean,

I bet you got a really BAD feeling when you plugged that in and it died.

I burned about 3-4 rods and then it quit. I was calm about it, that stuff can happen. I sent Mark a PM and he gave me a call to help me sort things out. I sent the pics to Mike in support and he also emailed me back with some help as well. I took the cover off and when I saw the fuse I was relieved! When I figured out it was my fault, I was glad I did not completely burn up the welder! It's always good to remain calm instead of showing your butt, especially when its your own fault!

Hey Sean, You might want to update your signature since the Millermatic is sold and the 140ST delivered.

Is the 140st a 110 volt welder or is it a 220? I am wondering why would it matter either way if the ground and hot are mixed up. For clarification only i know nothing about electronics or wiring up plugs (just the basics). On my 250 ex what difference would it make if its wired backwards? I know i got the ground right but the 2 hots that go into it im not sure it goes up to 250 and burns 6011 and 8018,7018 rods good.
    Thanx in advance

On 220V, black and white BOTH carry power and have a simple ground in a welder. One 110V, you have a hot wire, a common and a ground. If the white wire (common) and black wire (hot) are reversed, then you will have problems. The only sure way to make sure is to remove your wall plate and ID the wires on the receptacle, as it seems a lot of existing wire installations in places like garages where "homeowners" made some self home improvements may have not have used the right colors. Sean's wiring on his plug was probably right, but someone wiring the wall outlets had it wrong, or maybe the screws were mixed up. I suspicion a lot of our customers problems with the units we do have that operate on 110/220 hook their units up wrong.

I actually think my plug had the colors wrong. The female plug I purchased was colored correctly, and the male plug was colored opposite. When I checked my welders, plasma cutter, and extension chord I was backward. I was lucky! I spent about an hour welding the bottom side of my trailer floor last night. I would have felt like a complete moron If I had blew up the welder!

The positive side, it is one smooth welder! It needs longer leads which I already have. I hope Everlast adopts the stinger for the other machines, it's very heavy duty, and I think its better than the tweeco stinger I am using on my power arc 200.

what style stinger is it? I'm not a huge fan of the one that shipped with the I-MIG. it's heavy duty, but it's slow as balls changing 3/32" rods as it won't grip them without tightening up the handle. I like the clamp-type for that reason.

A vast improvement. I hope Everlast will consider that type with all equipment (at least as an optional choice at the time of purchase). I had never used any other style until I received one with my PU 205P. Well sir I don't like it! (The stinger that is. I like the PU 205P just fine although I would love to know the specs of the pulse feature).

That is the old style stinger you like and I prefer them myself. But many like the new style. You can, for about $10 for a 200 and $12 get a 300 amp old style and replace it pretty easy.

Mike, I "borrowed" one from my Lincoln Tombstone since I don't use it much and it's for sale. The next owner can switch it if he wants the other type.
