If automotive antifreeze is not recommended, how is RV antifreeze different? Is it used in an rv for something other than cooling the engine? (Preventing drains from freezing...?)

Auto antifreeze will kill you very painfully while RV antifreeze generally will not. RV antifreze used to be an ingredient in DR. Pepper in the "good old days". It is used to freeze proof the potable water systems in an RV for off season storage.

Fresca contains something called "glycerol ester of wood rosin", which doesn't sound too appetizing either.

So the idea is to mix RV antifreeze into the drinking water systems? Seems like it would be easier to install a drain valve at the lowest part of the system, and just drain it when the weather gets cold. But that would prevent winter travelers from doing the RV thing the rest of the year, wouldn't it.
