Here are a few of my welds that I welded while at Midwest Technical Institute.

This is an overhead multipass (6) fillet weld welded with e7018 at around 70 amps

P.S one of the sides I accidentally did in backwards order

This one if from my time at CACC (Capital Area Career Center) (basically my high school morning technical class). This was done on a Miller XMT (MIG mode) if I remember correctly using short circuit transfer. I used a circular/triangular weld pattern.

Very nice oxide. I hope to get welds that pretty in the near future but I am certainly not there now. No schools of any kind for hundreds of miles around me (not even high school adult vocational classes) so I am self and forum trained. Pics of great welds give me something to shoot for.

Thanks for the kind reply tritium!! I am very fortunate to live in an area with many welding schools very close by. (Not to mention surprised since Springfield is mainly white collar city).

Surface Welds done with E9018 SMAW electrodes (This was an assignment I had in high school shop class that had to do with the concept of resurfacing.)

Oxide00 nice welds. I like 7018 when I stick it is so nice to burn. Does your class include MIG and TIG to?

If your referring to Midwest Technical Institute yes it does. In fact I passed destructive tests for those.

So you have MIG and TIG done? Do they help find you a job? Do you know the starting pay range in your area?

Thanks for the reply . Yes they help you find a job (several of my high school shopmates were immediately hired on at one of ADM, Decatur's contractors for 17 dollars an hour). There are not very many welding jobs in Springfield, the nearest major blue collar city is Decatur hence is why Decatur is where most of MTI's students get a job. I myself have started summer school in preparation for college (Though I have applied at numerous jobs where some welding takes place. I'm still waiting to hear back from them)

sure wish we has something like this up this way - we just have night class and they are 300$ for the first class that is 4 hours longs 2 night a weeks for 2 weeks with 8 hours of lab time. Which didnt seem bad until you add in the tution fee, student fee it was going to end like like 600$ for the first class, and about 400$ a class after that. To get to tig you had to take the intro class, a mig or stick class, and a fab class just to take the tig calss

Do you do any pipe welding in what i think they call a 6G position...?

6G 45 degree angle?? I sure did!! I did 4" stainless schedule 10 , 4" carbon schedule 40, and 6" carbon schedule 40 and passed !! (6G was the hardest to pass!!) I also tried 3" schedule 180 pipe carbon 6g TIG but never had time to finish (VERY VERY hard!! I got tired of sharpening tungsten).....DJGARNIER school sure is expensive though I had a lot of fun it ended up costing around $$13,000.00 for the 40 week welding and pipe fitting course.

Hey the other day when picking up some steel I came across some pipe (steel) that is very hard to cut, & grind....I was wondering if you might know what kind it is? I held on to it in hopes of setting up those 6G prerequisites in my garage, & getting some practice in...






Now this project is on hold... @ least until I figure out what variant of steel this is. It doesn't look or grind like mild, or stainless steel... Is this a good thing, or bad in reference to welding in a 6G position...?

Hmm, that looks way thicker than schedule 40. May I ask where you got it from??? It might be a component of something which would explain the toughness.
