I often work on multiple pieces @ once during a series so they can compliment one another to some degree. This sculpture when finish will be constructed of bronze, & steel. I have not choosen a tittle for it as it is still incomplete. I would estimate any where from 10-25 hrs. until completion @ this point.

The bronze piece was cast in silicon bronze, after being formed in wax. The rest is all mild steel... so far.

That is interesting but I think I like it. Did you do the casting work yourself?

Yup lost wax.... this piece is currently less than eight" tall.... similar to other pieces in the series. A while back when I was set up to do casting work, a lot of pieces were cast in multiples... because in casting your never guaranteed a perfect cast so normally people cast multiple parts in case an air bubble gets caught up in the shell when pouring.

Oxide, Lost foam is a great casting method too (for machine parts anyway). First you carve the foam with either a hot wire or CNC router. Coat with Drywall compound then sand cast as usual. Very clean castings.

I've used most of the known methods... lost wax, vacuum, sand. Lost wax seems to be the most versatile, but my favorite it vacuum casting. Vacuum casting can be done on a small scale, but the best part is that vacuum casting offers up MUCH more detail than regular lost wax casting.

Oh yes I really want to do lost foam casting once I finally build my foundry. Vacuum casting sounds really interesting as I have rarely heard of it.

Vacuum casting is normally done with Jewelry where many waxes are built on a wax tree in a mold. It allows the molten metal to be pulled into many minute details and crevasses for very fine detail.
