Project #13 From Jason: Aluminum Catch Can
Well awhile back I made a temp catch can out of left over exhaust pipe that I had sitting around. I finally got to order the parts to make my proper can and spent a day to do it. Materials consisted of 3" 6061 pipe, 3/4" 6063 pipe, SS wool sponges, 4043 Filler, 6061 12AN bungs, SS braided PTFE line 12AN, 12AN fittings. Tools were press, 4 1/2 grinder, welder, drill and bit.
Materials
Cut the small piece open and flattened it on my press. Then cut off corners with angle grinder and then made them round. You can see one on top of the pipe.
After the top and bottom were completed, I welded on the bottom and then used some more of the extra small pipe to make an inner section to hold the SS wool.
The fitting was welded on the side for now but I will do it different later.
Here is the can with wool
Welded shut with nipple on top for the filter.
The fitting is located as I showed above. The plan is to cut it off later and make a flat angled section to and weld it into the pipe and the fitting on it.
Total time was maybe a couple of hours. It did not take too long really but I did not keep track as I was doing 3 other things in the mix of this.
