Thread: PP256 power cord ?

  1. #1

    Default PP256 power cord ?

The PP256 draws 42 amps 220v or 38.5 amps on 240v at full power yet comes with a 12/3 power cord that's normally used on a 20amp circuit.

Everlast doesn't recommend using the plug that comes in the box, so what about the cord ?

Has anyone changed theirs to 8ga ?

This wouldn't affect the warranty right ?

The power cords shipped on the machines are adequate to operate the machine within its design specifications.

The 8' cord, at 42 amps, drops less than one half of one per-cent of the voltage.
12/3 may normally be used on a 20amp circuit, but more than that, the length of the run and the breaker rating will determine what gage of wire is used to stay under the 3% drop maximum. Furthermore, you could build yourself a 30' extension cord with 12awg wire, and only drop 1.7% of the voltage.

Check out http://powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm it has a JavaScript calculator where you can compute voltage loss for various amps/awg/feet.

IIRC, Performance has mentioned that Everlast does not want you to change the power cord.

Please also note that welder power cords are allowed by the NEC to be derated for duty cycle. Duty cycle of the 256 is 35%. Also, note that this is the max inrush current, not the max operating amps. Operating amps are at 23.

    Thanks for the info.
