    Default New to fourm

    Hi,
I have been a hobby welder since high school. Just bought a everlast 140 st, My Powcon 300 SM will not turn down below 30amps or so, too much power doing tig on small parts. Plus the idea of a small welder that I can plug in to 120 was just to appealing to pass up. Ran a few tests with 6013 1/8 and also on one of my current 17 series touches. So far so good. Got a laugh from the singing it does with an open circuit, quiets right down under load. I like the display showing amp settings. I haven't checked with amp meter how close it is to measured amps.
    Cheers for now

    Tom,

    Welcome aboard.

Assume you're using 6013 with a stinger and played with the lift start TIG with the other torch?

I myself have that unit on order just for the 110volt side. The guys I've talked to love it. Seems like a nice portable option for me. It is a new model for us.

    Default 140 st

    Mike,
Yes correct. I'm not used to using such small cable. I have over size wire on the Powcon. As for the Tig, yes scratch start. I have a Lindy external HF and am wondering if the 140 ST can take driving into a stand alone HF supply?

Lift ARC and Scratch Start TIG are two completely different animals. Welcome to the forum.

Lift and scratch, as you say are different from an electrical, contamination of the tungsten and work point of view. But from what I can tell the act of touching the work to get the arc started are about the same. Ether way, if you scratch along or touch and lift the arc starts. (with scratch the arc might not be where you really want it.)
Thanks for pointing this out, so I could go to the web to read up on the differences.

lift arc is an advanced function designed to give the same functionality as scratch start without contaminating the tungsten, as no current flows until AFTER you lift the tungsten off the metal. effectively means you don't need to re-sharpen your tungsten as often, which is a big bonus in my book.
