It is gold (covered by blue paint) didn't you know? Miller just cost me a bundle. They had a video on you tube of tig welding a F117 model from stainless steel. One thing led to another and now I have a RC Aircraft Hobby to support as well as saving for a PowerTig 250 EXT.

I would almost thing you would be better off to check the scrapyards once a week. I'm sure a good piece of plate or maybe a table from a factory might come through.

Just build one. Find a local scrap yard as sugested. I found a local dealer in Phoenix and purchased a 60”X48” 3/8” plate for $155 and two 20 sticks of 11 gauge 2 inch square tubing to fabricate my welding table. Second bet is search Craigslist for tables but that is a hit and miss.

for personal use, I'd be inclined to build one. however, if you're planning on welding as a business or a sideline, non-shop-built things tend to make people feel you're professional. also, if the table is out of square or what have you, you can send it back and get another one. sometimes 1/2 a degree makes a difference for fixturing. the other thing you have to take into account is your time building the table. if it takes you 8 hours to cut up, weld up, clean up, and paint a perfectly square table, you need to budget for that loss of working time. obviously, these are what they call 'soft dollars,' but if you've got business lined up, you're probably better off buying a table.

I've been eyeing that portable stronghand table for a while. sure, it's a bit light duty, but it's hard to argue with the price. you could get a whole lot of welding done with a pair of them for about the same price you'd pay for a 1/2" plate to build your own (I know, not apples to apples).

    just my two bits.

I work at a power plant and all of our welding tables were fabricated at the plant, one is about 15'X15'x2.5" thick. If you need a precision welding table it would agree that it would be easier to shell out the cash and to purchase one that with machined surfaces.
