Thread: Mobile metal and wood racks

  1. Default Mobile metal and wood racks

Anyone made any mobile racks for scrap metal or wood? I was thinking of something like the flat carts you find at Lowe/Home Depot with 1000lb casters.

The wood rack - maybe a couple U frames welded upright for sheet's and maybe some square bar with pieces welded at 90 degrees off of that as shelving for small stuff (2x4's, 2x2's, etc)

The Metal rack - perhaps a similar square tube with rack as above for 3' - 6' material and in front of that perhaps a number of something like a bank of 10" round tubes by 16" long welded upright to organize smaller pieces.

I would like something mobile so I can get them out of the way depending on what I am working on.

    Thoughts?

Any value in angling these upward slightly? That way if you are handling tubes or pipe they're less likely to roll off.

Well I can certainly post a picture of what we have. Its a 2000 pound capacity cart. It has casters at the far end, and closest to the handle we have swiveling casters for ease of steering. Tell me if I misunderstood what you are planning.

Just built one for all my sheet goods. Started typing this out and realized I didn't take any pics along the way... (in my defense, it was over 100* and I was just trying to get done) I'll try to snap a few pics, but basically what I did was run two 5' long 2x4's parallel to each other, and then across the top I set 3 30" 2x4's perpendicular, one at each end and one in the middle (and a 4th on one end to keep small pieces from falling through). Then I attached 3 pairs of 4' long 2x4's to 8" blocks on the bottom, screwing the other ends together. I capped it with a 5' long 2x4 screwed down into the ends of the vertical pieces. 4 4" swivel casters from HF rated somewhere around 250-300lbs each are at the corners.

And then for non-sheet stock I bought a metal rack from Woodcraft (added a shelf bracket in the middle for shorts). The bottom left is loose so I can slide it up when not in use so the wife can open the washing machine. Currently has a couple hundred feet of square tubing on it for the upcoming mission project

Absolutely, for the metal rack I would sure do this

Sounds like that is it exactly

I saw that rack from Woodcrafters, are you happy with its capacity and adjustability?

    I am, though two things:

    1. Buy some bigger bolts and be sure to screw it centered into studs.

    2. I wouldn't use it for steel... at least not too much. pack it with 1x2, 2x4, etc. and it'll hold up fine. The steel on the lowest rung is probably equivalent in weight to the loaded shelf with the 2x4 above it.

Oh yeah, and put it higher than you think you want it... I had it lower the first time, on the other wall, wasted space above it, used up valuable space below it. I think it's about a foot from the ceiling now.

Ya the wall mount rack would be strictly for wood, I'll make the two mobile carts out of metal to handle a fair amount of weight.
