Thread: Ground Cable

  1. #1

    Default Ground Cable

I ordered a 25' torch with my PP50 and expect it to show up soon.

I'm assuming that it doesn't come with a ground cable - so I'll need to get a longer ground cable. When looking at ground cable size for welders, it's pretty big wire, but they run significantly more currect.

    So, two questions:
    1) What size cable is sufficient for a PP50 (it seems that 50 amps isn't all that much when compared to welders).

    2) Also, I've seen reference to "dinse" connectors (or something like that). Is that the connector type on the PP50 ground?

    Thanks

Just curious, why assume it comes without a ground cable? I looked on the PP50 spec page and while the ground cable is not in the list of included equipment, there is a picture of a ground cable below. I doubt Everlast would sell a machine with less than the standard configuration of parts, just as GM wouldn't sell a car with no tires. The photo shows a dinse connector on the ground clamp- similarly they'd include a cable diameter with enough scrote to do the job well. Are you thinking you'll need a ground cable with greater capacity?

All of our units come with a ground/return cable. What I do is clip one to another (two together) for a longer clamp. But you can take the dinse off the one we ship and the clamp and add wire to get the length you like.

    Thanks Mike!

I already have the unit. I am expecting an "add on" 25' torch.

What is the minimum gauge wire you'd recommend?

I had seen that you can get matching "dinse" connectors, so I thought I'd just make it like an extension cord.

    Thanks,
    Rege

Personally I would use #6. YMMV.

What size is the ground cable supplied with the PP205? I would like to make an extension or just make a longer ground.

I think they are around 10' or 12'. I have a spare I clamp on the end. But it's easy to make a longer one. Just re-use the ends.

I meant what size is the cable #4, #6, 1/0 etc. and what size should I use for a 25' run. Does Everlast sell the ends by themselves? If so how much?

If you go #2, that's good for 200 amps at 50 feet. So plenty for 25 feet. Doing the math, You can go #4 at 25 foot, will work fine and save money. Copper is crazy these days. You can pay more for the thinner strands and more flex, but for a return clamp I would not bother. Not talked a TIG torch here.

You will need to call sales to see what's in stock, we normally stock the dinse. The dinse can be found on the internet as well, the clamps, well all over.

If you are making a new return cable assembly complete, I would get a nice clamp myself. You can get a fine clamp for $5-10, no joke. But the solid brass ones are nice, just do not go for the $80 ones. I think tweco is high at $45 myself.

I'd use a good solid brass ground clamp with the #2 or #4 copper ground wire and this place has good prices on the dinse connectors.

#2 or #4 it will be and I was planning on getting a brass clamp. The supplied clamp that came with my PP205 has worked great, no problems.
X83 I have ordered plasma consumables from river-weld before on eBay (3shop-river) and the prices are great. I think it’s the same company.

Yes it's the same place and if you're just ordering on piece it might be cheaper to purchase on fleBay than on the web site.

I will see where has the lowest price as I'm in no hurry. The dinse connectors are the 25 correct?

Should be on the side of your dinse... the large ones say 35-70.

The number I think changes (Ray and I joked about that quite a while back), but river-weld is the place and same guy. I have ordered consumables from him many times. Prices are great and everything worked. Shipping was not bad either.

Of course always call our sales group first (877-755-9353), but I will vouch for river-welds myself if we do not have the part.
