Thread: Project 3 from bobwills- log splitter wedge

  1. Default Project 3 from bobwills- log splitter wedge

Its firewood season again and decided that its time to do something to speed up the splitting part of doing firewood. So my next project is gonna be a wedge that will split the log into 4 pieces instead of two therefore cutting time almost in half. But this aint gonna be like most ones people make. My plan is to make it to where it will just slip over the original one so if your just needing them split into halfs you can pull it right off without some big process.

It will look a lot like this.

Provided you have a powerful enough splitter, you may want to think about angling the horizontal blades toward the canter just a bit, that is keeping them horizontal, but tapering them a bit so that they slightly pull the wood toward the centerline of the main wedge. Most of the 4 split wedges tend to push the logs apart and provide unsatisfactory splitting on the horizontal split. The downside is that it requires a bit more splitting force as it increases the friction force against the main wedge.

Any day on a motorcycle like this that ends just needing parts and labor is a good day.

Yeah i know. Me too. It would speed things up so much. Not sure what kind of design im gonna use. Might use grater blades for the wings. Gonna be needing it pretty soon though.
