Thread: Help with metal thickness and fit...

Default Help with metal thickness and fit...

I need some square tubing to slide inside of another piece of square tubing freely.

I will be working with 2"x2" square tubing 14guage.
The square tubing to slide down inside of it will be 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" 14guage.

I'm thinking the inside of the 2" tubing will be roughly 1 13/16th's which would work. I just need someone smarter than me to verify this is right!!

Tubing size is OD so subtract it's wall thickness x 2 to get ID. Example 2x2x1/4 would be 1 1/2 ID.

I get that but I'm not to sure what 14guage thickness is ? I know 11guage (1/8th") is .120, 16guage is .60 or .65 so I'm guessing 14 guage is in the middle @ .90 or so, I just need to double check with someone that knows for sure.

Note that most tubing has a small internal burr, this will affect the fit. 2x2 inch 14 gauge tubing will have an ID of about 1.85x1.85 not the material left behind in the joint where the material was fused but this will only be on one of the internal faces of the tubing.

I order my metal from a place a state away so I can't just go down and test fit. I'm almost positive it will be fine even with the little ridge inside

1x1 inside 1 1/4 14ga fits very loose. I'd go with 11ga for the 2x2 if you need a snug fit.

I need it to move. I don't want it sloppy but it will be for a seat adjustment with a spring pin in the side of the 2x2 for height adjustment.
I would love to use 11guage if possible but I think that is cutting it too close.

    Appreciate the help!

Well, the more overlap you have the less noticable the play will be so 14ga should be OK... I've got some 2x2 14ga out in the shop, but no 1 3/4.

I've got another weight machine downstairs that has the same system I will be using. It is 2x2 O.D. and it has a Stainless 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" O.D. sliding into it...it is sloppy, but you can screw the spring pin in enought to take up the slack. I have no clue what guage the 2x2 is but it is pretty thin stuff.
I want mine to be tighter. I've got some small left over pieces of 2x2" 11guage from my welding table here so I guess the thing to do is order the 1 3/4" first and test fit.
