Powerarc 140 review

Can one safely power the 140 st off a quality generator equiped with AVR (automatic voltage regulator)?

We do not normally recommend running on a generator, as there are so many and some have really bad power out.

It should not be a problem, I would use the 220vac. And I assume with AVR you have at least 30 amps output. And make sure it has a nice sine wave out. What is the brand name on the generator?

I have a new powermate 6500 watt continuous 8125 watt surge genset. "Generator manual states "Equipment damage can result if equipment is not designed to operate within a +/-10% voltage variation, and +/- 3 hz from the generator nameplate ratings."

Like I said, we do not normally recommend running on a generator. I am not up on the 140ST PS design, so probably not worth the chance.

Just to clarify and simplify for others...One should only use a generator that has less than 10% THD (total harmonic distortion) to power the powerarc 140. So you are saying it would be risky to use my powermate or other generators with those same specs. correct?

I noticed on my 140st the female dense connector on the + side face plate seems to to be machined out larger then the - side.I am constantly having to twist the power cable (male dense) to make a good connection on the + side.I tried swapping cables from side to side and the problem is in the female dense. Was wondering if anyone else noticed the same problem on their machine?

Mine was a little snug the first few times I used it. Duncan is working hard on bettering QC.

I know this thread is a bit old but I was wondering if there were any conclusions out of this:

is the amp readout more accurate from units currently shipping?
any additional advice for using a generator with this unit?
has the size issue with the dense connector been worked out?

Trying to save up for one of these units ... don't want any issues to break my bubble at this point!

I own the Power Arc 200 and 140st. I bought the 140st for the price and I used one of the Harbor Freight inverters for small stuff around the house 110v. I wanted a small unit with a tig torch as well. I use my Power Arc 200 of my generator for mobile welding (I have 50' leads). I always carry them both on jobs, you never know! One I use for heavy duty jobs, and the other I use around the house, but both have performed well.

Hey i had a buddy with a mobile welding service really sucked he was welding on a roof and his welder and stuff was in a trailer . sorta his fault he left his keys in his truck , was welding stopped and took alittle break then went back to welding and had no power looked down off the roof his truck and welding trailer was gone . all there was to long leads laying in the parking lot . thank god they caught the guys that took his truck . so to say he dosnt leave his keys in his truck anymore lol

After each hurricane season you will hear that about roofers. I was on the roof, then my generator stopped. Went to check, ladder on the ground, truck/trailer or trailer gone. Now with cellphone, things are better. Imagine way back. Sit on the roof until the customer comes home. Or wave hands are cars going by if close to the road.

I purchased a HF 80 inverter a month ago. As I can't weld indoors, I was only really able to test it last week as it rains just so much in this area. I pretty much had hoped it would get my foot in the door so that I could learn stick welding and be portable. Unfortunately, I had to return it as it failed on me. Now trying to save up for the 140st as the HF 80 left a bad taste in my mouth. Really has me paranoid now as I don't want to invest in my next unit and have it unreliable. Great service from HF though. Very good return policy.

I visited your website. Nice helmet! I've got the same one but really, it is the only one I've every used so I don't know if it compares well with other helmets out there. Congratulations on your studies. Hope you've graduated or will soon.

Many of the job sites around here (chicago) have a dedicated ground guy to prevent theft. Cost is just factored into the job.
The one man outfits are simply screwed, unless they bring along a buddy or something.

On the calls we get in the ghetto, half the job(or more) is keeping the loitering/thieving vermin away from your stuff. It's funny how often the job requires carrying a 5lb sledge or crowbar around all the time S/F....Ken M

OK, cell phones are good for something. hahaha.. Interstate should jam them though.

A lot of sites here load everything up end of day in a trailer, hoist it with a crane and lock the crane up.

I have had a couple calls to build a large cage to go over rooftop AC units. People were grabbing fuses and now the copper and aluminum. Do not take it the wrong way, but I bet Chicago is probably a lot worse than here, though Miami could probably be close.
