I have a Logan 200 without QC gearbox, and i never messed with gear changes to learn how to thread. i guess i wont be doing it by your ingenious method. i am still interested in the hook cutter you mentioned. do you have a photo of the setup on the lathe?

Sounds like a nice lathe. I'd picked up a Harbor Freight 8x14 a couple years back on a great sale. The quality is remarkable for a Harbor Freight item. No quick change gearbox on this one either, just a big bag of various size gears to set up for the right thread pitch. Once you set it up for threading a few times it's fairly quick and easy. I made up a crank that fits in the end of the spindle hole and I just hand crank when I'm threading. That way I don't have to worry about using a threading dial or breaking something under power. I've found that being able to make these external and internal threads has let me make all sorts of things.

Actually my first thought about making this adapter was to make the insert a press fit into the male piece. That probably would be just as good a design as threading it and it would save some time. Even quicker would be to just bore out for the small DINSE, cut the groove for the lug and then make the notch in the side so that the lug can rotate to lock in. Can you picture that?
