Thread: Heating Small Parts

    Default Heating Small Parts

Is heating small parts to bend, with a tig torch, an accepted method? I have to make some tie-down hooks, and was thinking that would be an easy way to heat them up.

Heating with the tig torch can be done but it is awkward cause you cannot move away without breaking the arc at some point, better to invest in a twin carbon arc torch, once the flame is started you can play across the area being heated and pull away to reduce the heat etc. I have one and it works fine for heating or brazing, a lot cleaner than an O/A set up , but the light is very bright.

What's the material type and size and what shape will you bend it to ?

Small, something like 1/8 x 1/4 steel bent in a 'u' to hook ratchet straps to. Probably don't even need to heat it..

You shouldn't need to heat it at all for that. If you do want to heat it, you could just use a propane torch to do so.

Any day on a motorcycle like this that ends just needing parts and labor is a good day.
