Thread: FIRST PROJECT-Qcksnake-Porting Stand

    Default FIRST PROJECT-Qcksnake-Porting Stand

I decided to use tubing from some left over roll cages since i have to put a chrome moly cage in my 2011GT and another to do for a 2003 GT. I am trying to get practice around tubing welds and base to tubing. as you can see i still need a lot of practice.
These pieces are mild steel drag race tubing. I will get some chromemoly and the correct filler when i get better with the steel.

Anyway after welding this contraption up i started to think about what i could do with this scrap to make it useful........

I came up with this. I do a bunch of head porting, intake porting, Cobra and lightning supercharchers, etc. etc. SO right now i use a set of bent angle iron pieces with a stud welded to the end to elevate the workpiece. This should work much better:

(these welds look horrible but i had a bad time with it pulling around so i just gobbed some filler down in the crack)
I still have to clean it and paint it but this took me about an hour and its simple.
The tubing makes it a challenge to make a nice weld. I need a smaller torch head.(got to get hold of oleg and order one)

Let me know what you think.

    Good thing to practice on.

By the way the correct filler for 4130 cm tubing is NOT 4130 filler. 4130 filler should only be used if the parts will be heat treated. Most use an er70 or er80 filler with 4130 tubing.

Any day on a motorcycle like this that ends just needing parts and labor is a good day.

Is the purpose of the stand to hold the workpiece being ported up upside down so you can port it from underneath, while gravity pulls the metal shavings away from the workpiece, instead of falling down into the workpiece?

Also, am curious to see which porting tools you prefer using.

Thanks. I think there is a nickname for it around some of the cup shops here. I have a friend that does some of the cages on the Roy Hill cars so i was hoping he could nab me some rods and some spare CM tubing to practice on later on.

The purpose of the stand is to simply elevate the workpiece off the bench so i can get to (and see) the hard to reach places. Like down the throat of valve pockets. or the rear of the blower inlet snout.

I have a wide array of porting tools for aluminum and steel.

I will post some pictures tomorrow after i get back from shop.

Got some from summit, some from Buckeye carbide(seem to work best) and flap wheels and finishing stuff i get from american abrasives IIRC, sometimes ebay as well.

What I was getting at is that 4130 up to 1/8' wall is typically not welded with a special filler rod at all, unless it is to be post weld heat treated. Just plain ER70S2 or ER80, Same as used for plain carbon steel.
