    Default souvenir knife

Today has tried to forge a souvenir knife from a railway crutch.
On mine it has turned out.
The idea belongs not to me(Has borrowed on what that of the American blacksmithing sites)

Thats a real cool looking knife! what do you do? warm it red hot, give it a twist, then mash down the front to make the blade?

My friends! As well as promised today has made one more knife.
    Manufacturing process in pictures

We take a crutch and it is heated up in a gas forge

By means of a Blacksmith power hammer we do notches on the handle of a knife from all four parties

Further we clamp (warm) product in a vice and by means of a special plug we twist the future handle of a knife

After that we heat up a product and we flatten the handle

After that I began to experiment and have made the same actions (only at twisting I have changed a direction of torsion)
The result will be visible on a ready knife
Further we flatten out an blade till the necessary thickness

We mark a contour of an blade, superfluous it is cut off

That is some very cool, primitive shit. That skill would come in real handy after the apocalypse.

I wanted to put the phrase railroad or rail spike into this thread, so it can be found during a search. (these are not called crutches here.) Here is a link to another nice spike knife:

You it is serious? I do not know what to answer. I have simply seen where that on the Internet someone has made a knife from iron-road of a crutch and it became interesting to me. Yesterday I have made the first knife, today have made to photograph process only.(I think if to show it to the present smiths that they will die laughing)
In essence, if you lived more close I would give to you free of charge

One of the more critical areas of a knife is its edge - I am sure the mild steel on this does not hold an edge very well.

Have you tried to fold in layers of harder steel into the edge so you can have something which holds its sharpness? (very much like the Japanese).

The shop you are working in looks very old - what is its history?

    And thanks for sharing!

    Cheers,

    Mike

I am sure he probably uses some kind of oil quench to harden the blade.

Mike, as I wrote earlier it is a souvenir knife (decorative) I didn't pursue the aim to make real knife which at desire was possible to cut гвозди. As to Damask steel I know in the theory a little, but I also know that it is very difficult process

Joe,I have tried to temper for the sake of interest an edge in oil that it has not turned out (a crutch is made of very soft steel)
