Thread: Problems getting expendables for SG-55 plasma cutter/cable.

  1. Default Problems getting expendables for SG-55 plasma cutter/cable.

Say, I have a Powermaster 256 and I mainly need it as a plasma cutter but I have had a lot of trouble with the cutters. The one that originally came with the welder caught on fire on the handle near the cutting electrode. Because the unit was a few months out of warranty, I had to buy another cable/cutter assembly. This one has the number SG-55 stamped on the plastic near the cutter electrode. It cuts fine for a couple of minutes and then it loses efficiency very quickly. The electrode erodes very quickly.

When I look at the plasma cutter expendables, I don't see a cutter that looks anything like the one I have. Can I get expendables for this??? It's only about a year old. Is there another cutter/cable assembly that works better than this??

I had a heck of a time getting the right cutter/cable when I ordered the one I have now. At first, even after sending a picture of the connector plug, I was sent the wrong one which I had to return. Mine has a separate 7-pin connector rather than the connector which is integrated into the main cable plug. I sure hope you can help me -- I've pretty much had nothing but trouble with this unit from the start.

The original cutter which caught on fire but which worked pretty good for a while had a little metal guide on it to maintain the proper distance between the cutter and the work-piece. Are these available for this SG-55 cutter I have?

    Thanks!

If you have moisture in your air compressor, the wrong air pressure or wrong stand off, the consumables "will" go rather quickly. Also you can damage the torch. You mention your cutter died, but I think you meant your plasma torch burnt up.

Run your air between 65-70, add a water separator or dryer (that will help a lot of how long they last). Also, check with sales and get the stand off ring and use that until you get the right feel for distance. Make sure you do not see any moisture in the water trap, if you do add a desiccant type filter right behind the cutter.

Yes. Right at the back of the machine. Though I have a bigger unit at the compressor, a small dryer there work great for me.

Good advice. I think that an air dryer should be mandatory with any plasma cutter because moisture will wreak havoc with your electrodes. I would hate to fight the type of humidity they have down south when running a compressor.
