    Default 1968 Chevy C-10, project #5, d.fisher

    I have owned this truck since 1995, it was my first vehicle in high school, and since then it has been through various stages of driving and "storage". Over the past year and a half, I have come back to it. I set out to make a comfortable every day driver. Here's a pic of its current state, all of the mechanicals are done. Just needing final paint. Over the next few days I will dig up some of the build photos, there aren't as many as I want now, and I wish I took more.

    I had a 1964 Chevy step side in high school. It was neat, but also a death trap. LOL

    Is that all original metal?

    Thanks for all of the kind comments everybody.

    As far as the sheet metal goes, I got real lucky with the truck. It had the usual rust in the cab corners and rocker panels, all have been replaced at this point. Every other part of the truck was in great shape. It must have been taken care of and/or garage kept, because the records I found all show it had been a North eastern US truck since it was built.

    I have more pics, I have to dig them up, but at the moment, work is calling. Check back soon!

    1968-72 are my favorite years of Chevy trucks! That's a sharp truck!

    Thank you sir, I have a special place for these trucks in my heart too. I guess that's part of the reason for holding on to it for so long.

    I made this one a little more safe to drive. It has all modern suspension, it's lowered a little bit and has a front sway bar, disc brakes, and power steering. It's such a world of difference to drive now, no more of that top heavy sway. Ohh yeah, I forgot to mention that I got rid of the gas tank in the cab and put a fuel cell under the bed behind the rear-end. Remember hearing the gasoline slosh back and forth while going down the road!

    One of the most important parts of this build was to remove the gas tank from inside the cab. In replacement, a 20 gallon fuel cell was placed in between the frame rails. I measured about 7 times before I cut into the bed. After all, it worked out just fine, the spout lined up great with the access door. I had to make the raised frame due to the overall height of the cell plus the filler neck. All of the welding was done from underneath

    I also changed out the instrument cluster. All of the gauges are run off of electronic senders. This includes the speedo, which runs from a signal from the 4l80e transmission.

    I had installed the engine and transmission as one unit when the front sheet metal was off. Unfortunately there were some issues with the trans (a 4l80e). So, out came the trans, a full tear down and rebuild, and then here's the pics of it going back in. It was easier before when you could put it right through the front end. In this case, I had to buy a trans jack just to do the job. Luckily there was a decent priced tool supplier not an hour away in Delaware where I picked up this sweet jack for not a bad price.

    The bed was treated to a 3 hour session with a wire cup brush on an angle grinder, followed by a rust neutralizing and encapsulating, roll on bedliner. Word of caution, wear a respirator when using this stuff. Luckily I did, but the fumes lingered for hours after which made it difficult to be in and around the garage.
    The bed liner has grit mixed in which gives a nice textured finish. It also blends some of the areas which were less than perfect.

    I have already cut in the door jambs, hood, and between the cab with the rusty red metallic. And the cab top and grill are finished in an off white/cream color. I just need to let the weather warm up a bit and I'll shoot the rest. The cowl induction hood was a last minute add on, so I'll have to prep that as well.

    A lot of time was spent working on the truck for sure! Sometimes I wondered if I was just slow, or too picky. Probably both! And yes, a future vehicle may come out in a two tone green paint job.
