Thread: High pitched beep coming from machine

  1. Default High pitched beep coming from machine

Hey guys I was playing with my new powerpro 205 multiprocess and as im welding using the TIG process and for some reason today im getting a high pitched beeping noise when im welding. Seems to be more predominate in the pulse setting. No idea what it is but its annoying. Doesnt seem to be affecting the welding but just wanted to make sure it wasnt about to blow up on me or something

I really dont know anything bout tig but from what I hear it sounds like something going on with the high frequency. Do you use a separate high fequency ground ran to your machine on the back.

no i just use the regular ground on front. After using it for a few days it went away, just pops up now and then and like i said, doesnt make a performance difference so i guess ill just roll with it.

Well maybe try putting your welder near a ground rod and hooking the high frequency ground in the back to the ground rod. Its not necessarily but it is there to reduce the interference.

That is most likely the IGBTs making that noise. I worked on a CAT scanner that had a HV system with IGBTs and at some current setting the would make funny noises. I seem to hear it a low current setting only.

Could also be a coil (choke/inductor) squealing. They look like this... Click image for larger version.

Can be diagnosed with a 3 foot length of rubber or vinyl tubing by putting one end to your ear and moving the other end around the suspected area of the sound. When the tube is over the offending part, the sound will be much louder. Don't put your hands close to any shock hazard.

The remedy is to put a few drops of paraffin wax or clear fingernail polish on the coil to dampen the vibrations and stop the squeal.
