Thread: Digital Display on 250 EX

Default Digital Display on 250 EX

Just a quick question about the Digital Display on my 250 EX.

After turning the unit on and setting the amps to a set number(say 100 amps), the display will then show “100”. If at that point I press the 'pulse switch' on, the display starts to show (what I think to be) random numbers. I'm sure these numbers mean something, but I can't figure them out. Any help would be appreciated.

My guess is that the number displayed on the current meter when you are setting it is the desired, or set-point, value.

The value that you see when torch is switched on is an actual measured value that will be low until you start welding since minimal current is actually flowing, and will be driven to the set-point value once you start welding.

That sounds good....except the random numbers are being displayed when the torch is not even on.

When the pulse in engaged the machine starts to pulse the set amps at the rate set by the pulse controls. The display has to sample the set current at a much slower rate than the pulse is capable of changing the current. So what is happening is it samples the current on the way up and down while it’s pulsing which makes it seem like random numbers on the display.
    That is normal behavior.

To understand what the readout is doing, set the main amperage to exactly 250 with no pulse. Then turn the pulse on slow (switch) with .2 PPS (frequency), set the background amperage to 50% and dial it in to be exactly 125 amps on the display. Then flip the switch to fast and set frequency to 500PPS, you will then see the readout will display the main amperage or the back ground amperage or the average amperage that will be somewhere around 187.5 amps. When the pulse is on slow it will read both high and low, and when on high it will only read the average amperage or within 10% of it.

That is so you can set the two values. Or get them close to what you want.
