Power I-MIG 160 availability

Hello,

I have had my Everlast 200DX TIG welder for a few years now. Recently I have been welding many body panels together with it which it is great for but some areas you just into with both hands and still see.

Before I have a mental breakdown I think I need to buy a mig welder. I do not need allot of power as I have other welders for that, I read in another post last year about a 140? What is the avialability on that unit and the 160 please?

Also is the 160 dual voltage? What would the 140 be, only 120?

Wire size? Why do you only list down to 0.030 wire wize? What about 0.025 diameter wire?

Argh- now we're crossing posts! The 160 is dual voltage: the machine senses incoming power and adjusts automatically. This was very attractive to me in my decision to buy.

You're right, .030 is the smallest wire capacity. This was a bit of a concern to me, too, because I'd used an .023 welder in the past on body panels (a Linde model, which will tell you how long ago that was) and thought I'd be missing out. I have not used mine for material that thin yet so I'm not speaking from experience, but others on these forums have used .030 on body panels.

For the wire size would it just come down to the size of the feed rollers? As in could I make my own to hold/push the smaller wire if I so desired?

Also whether you have the 160 or 200 can you comment to its power when running off 120?

I would really rather get an answer as to model availability over the forum, I am sure many other people are also looking for a small unit.

I'm not technically proficient enough in how the machine works to answer this one- I'd suggest talking to Tech Support. If you acquired or made your own feed rolls (on a lathe?) I don't know if it would work in conjunction with the liner or contact tip, for instance. I know the Binzel gun uses Tweco #11 contact tips. The question may be moot, though, since the machine will weld on body panels... or do you have another application that absolutely requires .023 wire?

I have the IMIG 200. On 110v the duty cycle is reduced but I have not tripped the machine's over-temp warning. I've been welding on 1/8" and 3/32" (SMAW, FCAW, and GMAW) for the most part using both 110v and 220v, and been happy with it. I'll caveat that by saying I'm a hobby welder and don't have the history with different machines to make extensive comparison. Other IMIG 200 owners should add their comments.

As to model availability: this forum is more Tech Support than Sales oriented, although Oleg (Everlast President) does stop by frequently. Your questions indicate a level of sophistication that make me think a conversation with Tech Support (Mike or Mark) would take you further.

I use alot of .023 wire since best for welding exhaust and thin metal . don't see why you couldn't just buy a drive wheel for .023 . from the manual the wheel looks like just a standard wheel like miller use or Lincoln migs use . to me being a 160 mig it would be .023 and .030 instead since your pushing it with a .035 being that low amps of a mig welder , i have a lincoln 185 mig and it works like crap with .035 . the biggest wire i use in it is .030

The IMIG-200 is a great little MIG (my son will not part with his and I have offered him a 205P and we have a 250P). You can run .030 no problem and it will dial down pretty good too.

I do not recall if it is dual voltage (check the website), but I would really avoid welding with 110/15 or 110/20 myself.

I want to say the dual wire groove in the roller is .030 and .035. I think. We only run .030 here or larger, but if you can run .023 like Rod said, even better but you might need to pick up a smaller grooved roller.

The new units are dual voltage and perform fairly well with .030 wire.

The grooves are .030 and .040 which allow for use with .030 and .035 in the small groove, and .040 (which is mainly an aluminum size) and .045.

The .023 really doesn't offer a LOT more than the .030 does, especially with the arc force control we have and the inverter capabilities.

Our drives, though stout and built for torque are not built for speed. The best use of .023 can raise the wire speed demand pretty high, faster than our units are capable of putting out. You can weld down to 22 gauge or so with our units with .030. That's about the practical limit for a quality mig weld in my book, though some might argue.

22 Guage is exactly what I would be looking to weld with it.

I saw the specs for the 140 mig on the Canada website and whoever I spoke to said it would not be competitive here in the US but I would disagree. With its specs at least up to its peak output it has a better duty cycle than the lincoln mig 180. Now don't bother point out that "that is a transformer based machine" beacause a.) everybody knows that and b.) it is what is available so it doesn't matter how it works it is what you have to compete with. Honestly you guys completely out class them with specs.

I am not sure why you guys chose not to sell the 140 but for someone like me who already has a TIG machine that does stick, as well as an old lincoln ...giant welder that does stick only at 300A@100% duty cycle a mig only machine is all I am really looking to pay for.

Not trying to be rude and lecture you guys, as I love my TIG and hope you guys stick around I am trying to offer my opinion as help.

I was initially noticing that all the little lincoln weld packs all the way up to the 140 they sell all do 90A@20% so its duty cycle at 140 has to be pretty close to zero, your 140 on the other hand, at least according to the specs on the Canada website, says 135A@35% which is assontishingly powerfull in comparison and the price is not that far off from the lincoln and half the weight. Once again completely outclassing even the lincoln 180 with its 130A@30%, and probably quite low out at 180 like say 10%.

If you guys still have the 140 at the price listed in a week when I get paid I will most certainly buy as it is exactly what I need.

Sorry to keep going but I don't know what your ratio of selling small welders to big welders, I guess many people want something that can do big stuff when they need to but I feel that there is also a "small unit" market that no one is really filling with quality products.

I agree the 200 mig is the way to go plus its spool gun ready the 140 is not . I don't believe in tacking a welder out always by a little bigger welder for what you are going to weld

Well money dictates that I buy the cheapest welder I can that I like.

I was looking at the lincoln 180 because they seem to sell on ebay new in box for around $525 shipped to your door, which is also the same price as the lincoln 140 in stores (not welding stores they have rediculous markups).

As I said in a previous post, I want this for a specific purpose nothing more, I don't need stick capability and I do not need more power I assume there are many people like me and most probably end up just buying the lincoln partly because of availability and partly because they think it will be better.

I have that welder have had it for so long forgot when i bought it it welds great with .023 wire and .030 use the heck out of it , very well made to , never have had any problems with it even welded aluminum with it with the aluminum liner and roller kit i bought for it , See what you mean i do the same i set a price and dont go over it and try to get what will work for me at that price . What is required for a welder to be spool gun ready? Is it just an extra connection?

I am not worried by this as I can TIG aluminum on my bench or welding table/cart, want the MIG for welding in tight situations where the TIG is not required.

Yes, just make sure you see the round spool gun plug on the front face on the website. The gun is an option though.

Well judging from the price of any spool guns I will stick with using my TIG for when I need to do aluminium.

On another note I was wondering if anyone makes sort of a "helper" gun that would help pull the wire so maybe you could put an aluminium spool in the welder and push it from that end and the gun would help tug a little? I guess I also don't know what the problems with feeding from the unit itself are.
