Thread: Finished my first Tig Project with pics

  1. Cool Finished my first Tig Project with pics

I finally finished my diamond plate cabinet for my V Nose trailer. Not perfect, but I sure learned a ton. The main thing in my mind is I got better and learned from my mistakes. The last pic is one of the beads I ran when I first started about 3 months ago..(absolute junk), Finally, I now have storage for tie downs, etc... I made the cabinet to be removable as I need the space to haul items.

I haven't tried TIG yet...From what I can tell they look fair... But they look pretty strong. Got any pics of the newer welds??? I have seen some that look like pea gravel tossed in a corner.
    Shade tree MIG welder.
Now a Shade tree TIG welder.

You did a good job on that! If you go to a Tractor Supply... Look at the diamond plate tool boxes they sell, the welds look like they dripped globs of hot metal down the corners. That weld looks really good for some of your first Tig welds!
    PowerTig 250EX
    Power I-MIG 200
    Power Plasma 50
It's what you learn, After you know it all, that counts!

The pic of the bead of the cabinet sitting on the angle members is one of the last beads I ran. The problem in the beginning is I was running to much filler rod. In the end I started "stacking dimes". At this point I need to work on rhythm to get a consistent looking bead.

All in all I learned a lot about my machine and what settings the aluminum liked. I learned that if something goes wrong, you have got to make an adjustment in technique, machine, or combination of both. Total respect for people that do this for a living...Total Talent!!!

Actually, that's what kind of inspired me. I looked at those at Tractor and Northern and I said, "I can probably do better than that". Next time, I am going to work on Bending large pieces to join together instead of welding every piece. Problem is that I don't have a bender that can accommodate 4' openings. Thanks for the feedback!
