Thread: Pt250ex foot perception acting up.

  1. Default Pt250ex foot perception acting up.

Well my foot parcel is acting up on my 250ex. Some times when I strike an arc (hf start) nothing happens. When it dose strike an arc I have no amp control, some times I don't have full amp control but some, some times when I release the perception it still has a low amp arc.what is going on with my machine? Can this hurt my welder? What can I do to fix this problem? Im in the middle of a project with a tight deadline and this is killing me! Help please

Did you take the foot pedal off line and make sure that is the problem?

Do you have a good ground?

Check the pedal connector with a DVM. Pins 1-2 should be the switch. Pins 3-4 should be the pot. I recall around 2k Ohm when switch closes and should ramp up to ~50k Ohm fully depressed. Jumper (shorted) for pedal feed back is pins 6-7.

Double check connections, correct polarity, switch settings, AC Balance if using AC.

Also 4-5 will be the reverse of 3-4. It is a pot (3 pole) with a common, pin 4.

It is in 2t. Ito double checked all my settings and connections. Haven't checked it with my meter yet. But im suspect it has metal shavings in it I blew it out with shop air and it worked great for a while than it started acting up again close to the end of the day. So common sense tells me the pot and micro switch should be sealed, are they not?

Makes sense....I will try that on Monday. But if it comes down to it im gonna hit up an electronics shop and re build my peddle if worse comes to worse. I sure wish I wasn't having this problem tho, how common is this problem?

sorta corny lol but i take a big food storage zip lock bag and put the hole pedal assembly inside bag and zip it as far as it will shut really keeps dirt and dust out of the foot peddle . mostly since from all the metal grinding dust in my shop.. I find the really expensive tig foot pedals are sealed to keep dirt out cheaper ones not sealed that crc is great stuff for dirty electrical stuff . lol i like trying new stuff in my food pedal just got Click image for larger version.

Well I would check it with out the peddle but....I let some one use my machine and they failed to use the cooler and melted the lead through the hose. So rather than replace the entire thing I fished the lead through some 3/8 high temp hose (good to 400*) but there wasn't enough room in the torch for the 4t switch that I rarely use so ya, after typing all that I relized I can just jump the pins on the plug

So I was just thinking if my peddle is dirty....what dose the inside of my machine look like? Do I dare open it to vacuum it out or will that void the warranty?

I got reimbursed for the torch in meterials and more than the torch was worth so im good. It was a quick fix but no 4t switch.

Some or all of your problem might have something to do with your Downslope knob not being set to 0.

When using the footpedal, if you want the arc to extinguish immediately (as we usually expect it will when using the pedal) Turn the downslope down to 0 seconds. Otherwise, breaking the microswitch (as you lift the footpedal nearly all the way up) will just begin the downslope current tapering, and will not necessary break the arc immediately.

Maybe your friend who fried your watercooled torch cable fiddled with the downslope knob.

Too bad you got rid of the torch switch, it would be really handy for a situation like this where your footpedal was acting up. You know you can use the torch switch in 2T mode as well as 4T, in fact I always use 2T mode (I like to set it up so I can vary the switch to throttle the current... seems to work nearly as good as a peddle.)
