Default PowerPro 205 - first BIG welds - porosity issues resolved

Well, the issues I had with Porosity are now gone. Seems like there were a host of little thing that were working against me. Any one of them could have caused the problem. Hoses, insificient cleaning - inside and out, bad gas and technique - probably in combination with each other.

Well, tonight, with hoses replaced, new gas, flow set to 7.5L/min and VERY CLEAN material, I sharpened-up a 1/16" electrode and tried it again.

I built a simple joint of 1/4" mild steel and vola! This is a combination of 3 welds. No porosity at all.

I'm sure the pros will point out issues with this weld but, for a 25-year broadcast engineer and 2 month welder, I didn't think this was half bad.

    Looks much better!

You will probably fair a bit better on teh thick stuff if you use a lager diameter tungsten (3/32 or so).

Shoptask 3-in-1 (not currently in my garage, but I own it...)

Any day on a motorcycle like this that ends just needing parts and labor is a good day.

    I agree,,,the weld looks cold,,,

inthefrey,,,here is a site with a Tech manual that will be of great help in choosing electrodes, cupsizes, litre flows and Amp settings
The information most helpful to you are at the bottoms of page 3,,4,, and 6 of the manual,,,,great reading for a new tig guy...

    http://www.ckworldwide.com/technical.htm

if you study the charts you can see there is a relationship to cupsize and litreflow,,,they very near the same,,etc,,,,also you can see that electrode size and cup size have their limits and ranges....just plain old good reading to understand how to set up your machine...

Many thanks! You know, there are probably a dozen possible combinations that will work.

I wish I had taken a picture of the root pass. It was awesome! As I said, this was the 3rd weld on this joint and, you're right, I probably didn't have enough heat on it. As far as the various welding sites are concerned, you can never really learn all there is to know by watching all the videos and reading all the text - you have to DO it and develop your own "style" and become ONE with your machine.

The weldingtipsandtricks site is about the most comprehensive. However, you're watching a guy (jody) with 30+ years of experience trying to teach adult noobs like me how to weld. ( I can see me now in a class with a bunch of 19-year-olds )

Anyway, I'm having more fun doing and learning this than a human should be allowed.

Thanks all for all the great pointers! Now, back to the bench! I'll post more stuff soon!~
