They do make countersinks for metal. I use them all the time. I usually get them from http://www.mcmaster.com/#countersinks/=h7aw5i.
I like to set the cordless drill to the slowest gearing, this helps eliminate chatter and prolongs the bits life.

Hand tools up the wazoo.
I don't use a countersink because I like the hole to be the same size as the screw head, flush. Some screw heads taper to a sharp edge and some don't (like decking screws).
