Thread: Washington stater saying hi

    Default Washington stater saying hi

Never made an intro post, lurked around for a while.

I don't have too much experience welding really, it's not my main job at work. I do all of our fab work and jigs but I just learned how to tig a couple years ago, in the parking lot of our LWS when we bought the precision Tig 225. Everything we do needs to be chemically inert so I use stainless for just about everything, or if it's not inert it needs to be lightweight so that's the aluminum stuff. I actually "learned" how to weld aluminum watching welding tips and tricks, lol. No classes or mentor to teach me so I'm not too confident in everything I do but my welds hold 3,000psi on 0.040" stainless and none of my stuff has fallen apart.

I want to buy a 200dx for use at home, maybe a plasma one day too.

    Welcome, Puget Sounder.

Nice weather we've been having lately, eh?

Look forward to seeing your stainless work.

I'll say, after last "summer" I hope this holds until September.... Oh just imagine how great that would be!

Once I can get something here at my house I can do some stainless for sure. I'll probably build a weld table out of some scrap stainless we have at work. I may put an aluminum top on it or just keep it around depending on what I'm welding on the surface of the table.

I sure do rodsmachine... That's a pretty industrial area. Many years ago, there was a specialty wrecking yard I liked to go to out on east marginal way (the west side of the Duwamish river), but they aren't around any more. I've got lots of good memories from about 15 or so years ago though rummaging around that place though, working on my old car projects.

There are some interesting marine related industries around the area though, for sure. More recently, maybe a year or so ago, I visited an interesting manufacturer in that area making some big aluminum dredges that were going to be shipped up to Alaska. I almost did some welding work for them (that's why I visited them because they were looking for some aluminum welding to be done), but it wasn't quite right for me because they wanted it done spool gun, not TIG (my specialty), so not for me. They paid me for making the trip out to take a look at their job though; nice guys. I got a tour of their place and found some other interesting projects. Apparently they make some kind of rail cars (didn't see them) and I also saw some biodiesel refinery equipment (high pressure welded stainless steel piping... looked expensive and very immaculate.)

I want to take a tour of the Nucor steel minimill some time, which is not too far away from that location. While riding on the West seattle bridge looking south, I've noticed glowing red billets of steel coming off rollers out of the place.
