  1. Default Buying oxy acetylene torch kit

So im shopping for a oxy acetylene torch kit and im wondering what everyone thinks are the best torches for the price. Maybe around $200ish. Also maybe what torches to stay away from. Also what is a good size of oxygen tank and acetylene tank. Also what about going used from like an auction. Im planning on prolly getting tanks from an auction if can find some. Was told that oxy and acetylene tanks are all sold separate and also torch kit is separate in a lot of these auctions. So i could prolly get tanks and not torch with it. Or just might rent if cant find any to buy for temparly because I think my dads company rents for about $2.50 a tank per month.

When you buy a torch especially if it is used, make sure you can get parts for it. Locally is a big plus. If you find that you have to special order a tip it is a bear to have to wait. Or get the puzzled look when you take in a tip.

BTW couple threads on tanks. Bigger is better if you use a lot of gas. They cost a lot less per cu foot for the larger tanks. You have to watch, depending on your area if you "buy" a tank from an auction or garage sale, and they end up a rental tank, they will get taken away when you try to fill them. In my area the larger tanks are almost all rentals. (above 125 cf)

Yes, I have a pair of oxygen (actually 3). Oxy can run out pretty fast. The acetylene can hold out for a while when you see it dropping you know you have still have some time left. BTW always make sure you shut your valves off when done. Hate to come back days or weeks later (garage guy) and find the tanks low or empty.

Yeah Im kinda liking the victors. I think thats what we have in our shop. We have smiths at school. Im kinda just thinking bout going new with the torch so dont have to worry bout leaks and get something good cause I hate always having crappy stuff. Want something that will last me a lifetime.
Would ones like this be a good one. Not sure since medium duty. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...7990_200357990 or actually a higher duty for less here http://www.weldfabulous.com/p-20700-...ty-outfit.aspx . What does everyone think of these.

Yeah it is a lot. And that is the price for any size. For oxygen it costs like $20-30 and $30 is like the big sive like 200cf. Acetylene cost bout 80 for a 130cf tank. Also its the same price weather you lease or own you own. Im planning on going as big as i can on tank size.

I would buy this in a heartbeat and may just do so as I have been watching it for a while and have never seen it on sale that low. Nevermind on the price there seems to be a glitch, if you do a search for it, it shows the price as being $159 but once you open it up it says $199 which is what the price is normally. I will still probably buy this set one day when I am in dire need of a nice outfit. You may be able to call them up and claim it is advertised at that price and convince them to let you have it for that.

I would buy it for the same reasons I bought my Everlast welders because it is a lower cost alternative to the name brands of which a new equivilant would be $500? LWS told me $700 for a good sized Harris set which is what I would buy if I were rich.

The other thing about having a nice new set is the seats for adjusting the gas flow will be brand new. No PO has tightened them too tight and ruined them. If you buy a used harris set, just replacing the worn seats and other parts to bring it back to new will cost you around $200. I only know because I looking into parts to rebuild my dads set.

One problem I ran into... I bought a regulator from Harbor years ago... It died... Seat went bad... I tried to buy another one. I track it down to the manufacturer in Italy. Yes they had the part but it was going to cost under $10 but the shipping cost a lot more than a new regulator. I went back to Harbor and bought another regulator... Getting over 10 years out of the first was still a lot cheaper than buying a brand name.
