No, actually, a straight down position is preferred. But it works well on thin sheets of metal and for cuts where you are having problems with slag fouling the cut behind the torch. Keep a good standoff and you will be okay.

After reading this I went back and double-checked my manual that came with the SuperCut50. It specifically says to hold the torch "at a slight angle". Now I don't know what their definition of "slight" is, but to me anything up to about 10 or 15 degrees fits my definition, so that's what I've been doing.

Even if straight up and down is the preferred postion, angling the head a little backwards - away from the direction I'm cutting - sure makes following a line a lot easier. If there isn't a real problem doing it this way (which was my original question) I think I'll stick with it...

Maxx P has an AC TIG machine and he does aluminum. If you guys are close by, you should hook up. He is a good guy.

The issue of the geographical location of fellow forum members brings up a good point. Is there a way to list our location on our forum name as it is listed when we post? I’m not talking personal addresses here but something like a city and state. It’s nice to know where someone is when you are chatting with them and if someone is close to you where you may want to get together. For the record I live in Manchester MD.

Weird. Before my last post I went to the UserCP and added my location, but when I came back to the forum, it still didn't show up, so I thought there must be some other trick to it. So I posted my silly comments hoping the mod or someone would post the trick to it. It worked!

The odd thing is that my location didn't show up at first, but then this morning, there it is. Must be one of those things that only takes effect after a delay...

You need to click refresh on the browser. Since the browser knew you had been on the thread it pulled it from you computer rather than our website to save time. A refresh or update to the post and it will show.

Well, got to work on my poject some more this weekend. I finished customizing the oil pan to clear the front axle on the Jeep.

The Engine cradle brackets are complete - now on to the crossmember.

Progress is a bit slower than I'd like, but it steady.

I'll post some pictures here in a day or two. You guys have to promise not to laugh at my uneven, lumpy looking welds, though. Nobody ever told me my welds were pretty (and if they did I'd know they were lying) BUT I've never had one of them fail either...

Don't be shy, post the pictures. We all have had less than great looking welds. We may even be able to offer a few hints for you to try too. At least you are making progress! I have been revamping the shop by adding a second lift so all progress on the projects has stopped for now.

Well guys, I've basically been busier than a one-legged man in a butt-kicking contest. BUT, at last I fnished my crossmember/motor mount assembly today - about the time it got dark. It turned out really well - almost a metal sculpture if I do say so myself. I'd never have been able to fab it without the plasma.

I'll post a few pictures here in the next couple of days...

OK, so they've been a long time coming, but here are some picts of what I've been fabbing - and what the Cut50 has been put to use doing...

    The bracket looks nice.

The oil pan looks smaller and the seams, you do not want one to give up.

All in all, if it breaks you can fix it. Are you using our welder on the project? Or our cutter?

Looks like a lot of time and effort. Thanks for posting.

If you mean smaller in capacity, yeah it is a little smaller - about a half a quart or so. The welds are good and solid - chipped on them with a slag hammer and no signs of cracking.

Just the Cut50. I have a Century 220v SMAW for the heavy stuff and use a Century 110v wire feeder for the lighter stuff. Both are old faithful friends that I've had for 15 or 20 years...

Yeah, and I still have a fair amount of fab work to do - like the exhaust. But I think it will be worth it...
