Thread: Thinking about a PowerTig 200DX

Default Thinking about a PowerTig 200DX

After doing a little research I think I’m going to purchase a Power Tig 200DX … that is … if I get the 25% discount mentioned when I registered to the forum and said I wanted into the contest … list price is $1099 so with the discount my price should be around $825 right? Does anyone have any advice about this unit? Living in Oregon I shouldn’t have to pay sales tax and if shipping is covered it will be a done deal … anyone have any comments about this unit? Likes … dislikes … reliability … service experiences etc?

I have one, I like it. The amperage setting on them is a bit odd, mostly because it does not update the amperage on the display when using the foot pedal. Download a manual and read it. Also look through some posts about the 200DX. There is a new version that is currently available in Canada, and I believe soon to be available stateside that has a more conventional operation to it.

I run mine on a 30Amp dryer circuit with 100+ feet of 10 gauge extension cord. Full power on AC and haven't tripped a breaker yet.

As for teh discount, you will have to qualify for the contest to receive it. 100 posts required from your starting count until the end of the contest. I have never used a coupon from the contests. I believe I even still have a 40% off "coupon" from one of the original contests, along with a 25% off one.

Any day on a motorcycle like this that ends just needing parts and labor is a good day.

    Sportbike,

I have a 200DX I have had it for two years now and it is amazing, I have never had a problem with it. I am so happy with it that I just bought one of their mig welders the 140 and I really love it too. If you were not 3000 miles away I would invite you over.

Thanks for responding Sportbike and Julesthe great,That settles it ... one way or the other I'm going to get that Powertig 200DX. I love the simplicity of it pre-flo and upslope appear to be pre set ... 2t, 4t or it can be overridden with a foot pedal. Since it is only 200 amps I shouldn't need a water cooled torch ... I think this would make a great addition to my shop.

The new version has upslope adjustment and the amperage is controlled on the panel when using the foot pedal as in more conventional applications.

I'm not sure when the new welders will be stateside, either way, the machine is fairly robust and I've had no issues at all, works just as advertised.

Thanks Sportbike ... that's good to know. To this point most of my welding has been done with stick and mig but about a year and a half ago I picked up a small DC scratch start TIG and discovered I liked the control I had with thin metal. I am looking forward to using a TIG system with more power and adjustment features. I think this is going to be a lot of fun. When I started to teach myself how to weld I rapidly discovered it was an enjoyable activity.
