Thread: Powerarc 140 on 208 vac

  1. Default Powerarc 140 on 208 vac

Can you run a PW140 on 208 vac

  2. #2

    you must have 3 phase

????? how does that remotely answer my question. I am asking if I take 2 120vac legs from a 120/208 3 ph panel and a Neu/GRND legs would it hurt the Powerarc 140. It is not much different than 2 120vac legs from 120/240 1ph

because only 208 i know of is 3 phase but there 3 phase is different from the usa . because 2 legs single phase of is 120 120 total 240 read this article that's why i asked 3 phase http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-phase_electric_power .. dude just trying to help sorry if i offended you

    How many 110v lines are in a 3 phase? 3? or is it 3 - 220v breakers?

3 phase comes 2 ways there is 4 wires coming in to box it makes 240 volt if only 3 wires coming in to box will make 208 . my shop has 4 wire coming in to my 3 phase box at my shop

    3 or 4 hot wires?

I want a Bridgeport mill and they are a 3/4 phase machines. But in my garage, I have a dedicated 200 amp meter, just for my shop. Right now, all I have on it is a 220v for my welder, 1- 110v for small stuff and another 220v for a/c.

So I have the power, just wondering how I would wire it up.

with 3 wires there all hot -- with 4 wires 3 hot and a neutral

Voltage does make a difference,,,found that out when I used my 250EX on 208 volts from my 3 phase with a 40 amp breaker,,,the breaker would blow and I had to run over and reset then restart the 250EX before the capacitators leaked down....the same 40 amp breaker on 220 or 240 volts would probab;y not do that,,and ,,it kinda makes sense when you do the math,,,,240 x 40 = 9600 watts at fire up,,,,9600 / 208 = 46.15 amps draw....Changed over to a 50 amp breaker and no problems firing up. Bottom line if you have 208 volts the breaker should be a little bigger than listed at start up.

Geezer if a single voltage welder it would be ok but not sure about a duel voltage welder . like the 140 i fried a duel voltage plasma cutter on generator since wasn't putting out 220 volt check generator it was putting out close just 200v i think the plasma switched to 120 mode and that's why it fried it , i don't like duel voltage welders

Kinda did the same thing on a compressor motor,,,didn't think it had the right voltage so I monkeyed with the RPM on the genset,,,and had a capacitator on the motor blow,,,,have gotten rid of that genset,,,,and I don't monkey anymore,,,not sure if I had too much or too little volts,,,learned a lesson though,,,don't screw with things you don't know about...

I looked at the manual since i have the 250 ex also it will work on 208 but they recommend using the ground lug on back of machine for 208 volt and a grounding rod in the ground to keep the frequency rite and interference checked out some other manuals on other welders that was not duel voltage and the say the same about grounding lug on 208 ..on the duel voltage welders there was no information on 208 or 3 phase

Three phase power comes in two flavors.

    Star and Delta.

Star has 4 leads - 1 for each of three windings, and 1 neutral which is the common connection point for each winding.
So for low voltages, this arrangement gives 208 volts between any pair of hot leads, and 120 volts from any hot lead to neutral.

    Delta has 3 leads.
This arrangement gives 240 volts between any pair of leads. There is no 120 volts, unless a winding has a center tap.

I've omitted the ground wire in both cases.

You probably only have 220v single phase. You will need either a phase converter, or an inverter to run a 3ph motor. Or change the motor to a single phase model. As with welders, an inverter will give you a bunch of features in addition to supplying the 3 phase power.

3 phase can come as delta or wye and with or without a neutral line, in a wide range of voltages.

I’m not sure on the dual voltage machine, it has circuitry init to limit the output when running on 110V, not sure how that will react on208. Normally it wouldn’t be an issue. I will try to get some info on whetherit would be ok on 208.

    Thanks Ray.
I use the Power arc 140 while traveling to many different LFG power plants converting fuel systems mostly and I often have to fabricate brackets and such. 120/208 vac is almost always availible. 240vac is not. I could use just a little more amps out of the welder sometimes to get good strong welds. The unit works great and I would hate to destroy it. Looking forward to your answer. Thanks to everone's input, I forget that there is still areas with 240 delta and other possiblilties out there. I watched an electrician on Cape Cod cook a FM radio station after the conversion from 240 delta with wild leg to 208 3ph, he hooked up the emergency generator that was clearly labeled as a 240 vac delta generator, I know because I labeled it, and He tested it. A soon as it transfered poof one leg off 190+ vac to 1/3 of the stations stuff. He didn't like generator techs telling Him His business so I didn't.

It's likely the fuses inside the machine would blow with any siginficant undervoltage supply.
As far as Delta not having 110V leg? 240V Delta 3 phase has two legs that measure 120 V (nominal) to ground. The third leg is a "wild" leg with voltage exceeding 200V. The star or more commonly referred to configuaration as "Y" or Wye does have 3 legs, but typically these are older 208 installations. Around here most farms are 240 Delta 3 ph.
