Thread: Adjustable Steady Rest

    Default Adjustable Steady Rest

For all you young guys with a steady hand, don't bother reading this.
This is for all of us older not-so-steady welders.
I built this height adjustable steady rest so my welds don't look like I did them while I was attached to a concrete vibrator.

Necessity is the mother of invention... Looks really nice. I was surprised when I started reading about welding how important it was to get into a comfortable position. Now that I am looking into TIG it is even more so. Not sure how many of you do it, but it is mentioned to TIG weld when you are sitting down at a bench. I was worried about getting a lap full of sparks. It sounds like TIG does not make near the spatter as a MIG does.

Tig doesn't make any spatter or sparks if everything is going right.

No it doesn't and if you go to Jodie's site www.weldingtipsandtricks.com he's been pitching something called a "tig finger" which slides onto your finger so you can rest it on your work piece and insulate yourself from the heat ... it's made of a fabric that allows you to slide your hand as you move down your bead. They sell for $10 and you can get a cut in price for buying multiple packs. I think I'm going to give them a try.

For some reason things don't always go right for me... So does that mean you TIG while sitting???

you can make your own cheap , its just header wrap cloth .Titanium Exhaust/ Header Wrap - 15' : Titanium exhaust wrap, with LR Technology, is made from pulverized lava rock and stranded into a fiber material and is engineered to be stronger than typical wraps on the market today. It has the ability to handle higher heat for improved performance and durability and with a cool carbon fiber look! a hole roll for under 20 bucks Click image for larger version.

That a great idea. Let me guess, eBay? I'm guessing there because you are the master at finding useful stuff there ....
Is it OK to want to break something just so that you can weld it back together?

I really like this idea. By extension, maybe have something that can slide horizontally (but not too easily, of course) as an addition?

If you cut it, do the ends start to unravel easily?

Just thinking of an variation on 7FC_Driver's great idea of the "adjustable steady rest". Made me think of something like a ball bearing drawer glide moving in parallel to the bead you want to lay for the times you want to a straight weld.
