I had to read up on heli coils too, interesting stuff. If you use them to replace damaged threads, do they have the same torque capacity as the original threads?

Meh, don't like helicoils...

The helicoils work well. Better if it is not a bolt that is inserted and removed often. They have been around for a long time. I have ran across the timeserts. Looks like they are the new school way of replacing threads.
Thanks for the candle idea will have to give it a shot next time. I have tried welding the nut in place. Mostly with bad results, but will keep trying. I know I will run across more froze bolts.
One thing I have learned over time. If the bolt feels like it is going to break... stop and give it some help. Usually heat will help a lot. Once you break it, it gets a lot harder to get it out.

i get some bolts that just wont come out and end up putting on my Bridgeport mill and drilling out . have something like this to drill made my own they work good http://www.brokenbolt.com/small-brok...actor-demo.php

Looks like a neat idea... As long as you have a flat surface to mount it to.
I see they don't have a price. I just made a post a while back about places having things for sale that are so high priced they won't even put a price on them. Like the motorcycle/car on the side of the road with a ph # and no price. Price is so high they are embarrassed to put it in writing.

make your own i did out of some 1 inch pieces of steel and use steel bushing from the hard store to have drill bit fit tight in hole. I make a lot of my own tools at my shop. need a wrench to do carrier bearing preload on a 14 bolt gm rear end wrench was 140 buck made it myself only cost like 3 bucks me making it . cant believe that much fro this wrench![]()

Is it OK to want to break something just so that you can weld it back together?

The Time-Sert FAQ says they won't attest to torque capacity because of there is too much variability in installation. But then they say this:
"TIME-SERT will state that if the thread repair is done correctly and with the proper length of insert used for the application e.g. the insert is the same length of the original thread engagement, the result should be a hole that should match the original torque specification of the hole."

The two I posted have better capability to resist unthreading, as they're physically locked in. The construction is more sound than a piece of wire stuffed in the hole. Everything has it's proper application, helicoils are fine for some things, but I'd rather go a step further and not worry about it.
Then again, rather than sert-ing my sportster cases I'm cutting out one side of the thread boss, welding it back up and re-drilling/tapping (eventually).

as long as you put lock tite on the heli coil it stays in . i put lock tite on the heli coil before installing then install a bolt with anti seize on it tighten to proper torque anti seize makes the lock tite not stick to bolt threads . at the machine shop i use ez locks since most the time i need blind hole threads http://www.ezlok.com/InsertsMetal/installVideo.html
